In 1442, a large rock detached from the southern flank of the Pic de Luc (above Luc-en-Diois). When it slid down, it hit a limestone spur downstream. This rocky mass divided, broke into enormous blocks and barred the Drome River into two points. Thus was formed upstream the Grand Lake (about 5 km long, 300 hectares of surface) and downstream, the Petit Lac (6 hectares). Both lakes are dry now.
