Description
In geology lichen can be used as an indicator for the time a stone has been in the same position.We would go to cemeteries to calibrate the growth rates of different species in our area using the dates on unpolished tombstones.

That's interesting. I thought they're only the reference of SO2 pollution...
P.S. Sometimes they do grow on smooth surfaces. I've seen some growing on metal.

They grow on almost any surface but not at the same rate and yes, there are some which are sensitive to pollution as well.

mais c'est peu de temps en géologie.
