A commission I'm doing has me stumped, so I made the Matriarch of the Gleam family to help get the juices flowing.

Y'know, Daybreak Gleam started off as another Twilight Sparkle clone, hence their synonymous names, that I deliberately made overpowered compared to the ponies around her. There wasn't an explanation as to why she was so powerful she just was. She was for a roleplaying game, and I do so enjoy fight-roleplays, Daybreak was perfect for it.

After dropping the roleplaying game I decided to give Daybreak some backstory: She's a light elemental, but not just any light elemental, a greater light elemental! By how great, I don't know. Probably in between the high-ranks and the head honcho light elemental. She was known as one of the more creative light elementals, preferring more complex uses of light magic, even mimicking some traits from other elementals.

As to why she's hanging around Equestria now, the story I've got down is that she was hunting down a rogue darkness elemental that managed to greatly injure her, forcing her to retreat and seek help from the ponies. It's some time after Nightmare Moon was banished when this happened. One pony, a unicorn named Meadow Gleam, was the one to help heal her injuries. As she rested in Equestria, Daybreak grows to love the harmony the elements seem to have with eachother, especially the forests.

Some shenanigans happen and Daybreak and Meadow permanently fuse together to become Daybreak Gleam and defeat the rogue elemental. After that Daybreak Gleam willingly gives up her place with the light elementals to stay in a secluded forest in Equestria, very rarely interacting with anything else. On one of these rare occasions she sees a happy little family of three and decides hey, I should try that. A baby happens, and then it grows up and makes another baby, and so on. Eventually Morningstar Gleam happens, followed by Evenstar Gleam.

Daybreak's lineage is peculiar, though. Her coat color has persisted through the years, all of them have been unicorns, have had either green or blue eyes, and all have been mares. Morningstar and Evenstar Gleam are anomalies. Morningstar because she was born a crystal pony, and Evenstar because he's, well, a boy. He also has purple eyes. Could Daybreak's higher blood have been diluted, or is something else afoot? Dun dun duuuun!

Dear Grandma Daybreak is adamant about her bloodline. Sure, Evenstar may be distant from her in the family tree, but he can still be just as powerful as she is! She comes out of solitude every generation or so to check on her grandchildren, right now shes keeping a closer watch over Evenstar and encouraging his magical studies. She's even letting him do dark magic, so long as she's supervising.

But eh, I'm just indulging myself.

Bonus:
-Daybreak appears as a frail old mare to the ponies she doesn't want knowing her true identity; think Granny Smith but a unicorn
-Alicorns can see through her facade, though
-Daybreak is basically a titan as a human, she's like a head taller than Principal Celestia
-Her mane used to be all gold, until she started using water and nature-based magic
-She's like, Orin's only blood relative present in his life (Mom Morningstar is missing and dear old dad just plain left before he was born)
-Daybreak has some serious mom instincts, if any of her children or children's children are in danger she's already right there to protect them
