Description
When the first settlers arrived on this new planet, they wondered quite quickly why trees would grow so spare in certain regions, even though it was a perfect location for trees growing.Soon they discovered the "Giant Tree Devourer", a creature as big as a mountain.
When at first all lived in fear of such a big creature, it was soon noticed that this creature actually only feeds on plants - trees to be more specific. So the tree mystery was solved.
Scientists examined the humongous creature and the following quite interest facts were discovered:
The creature needed to eat trees to survive, making it move constantly to find new feeding places - the huge head actually worked as a sail and so the creatures wandered where ever the wind would take them. At the time of a storm, this huge sail could be folded together, giving less attack points for the furious wind.
Only eating trees wouldn't give enough energy for such a huge body, especially since the next forest can be a long way off. It was found that the creature had a symbiosis with the various plants growing on it and also inherited some of those features - the huge wind shield was a huge leaf, absorbing the energy of the sun.
Edit: Added the tree in the foreground to make it even more clear that the creature is freaking huge.

I love the fact that he uses his huge head as a sail walking to where the wind will blow. Also we get to see how he pick up trees and eat them! Awesome detail.

Thanks! Glad you like the idea with the wind shield - thought that a creature that big would need any help to save energy where ever possible. There are just not enough trees to feed such a huge creature otherwise! That's also a reason that the creature has photosynthesis a second source of energy.

Ahh, thank goodness it's a herbivorous creature. I like where its mouth is placed;
makes me think it would make a terrifying desert monster if it sought out meat
instead of vegetables.
My suggestion would be maybe making the mountain peaks more visible. The
mist is great, but I doubt it would reach the extremities of the mountains. What
you did with the trees is very understandable. It would be harder than a Dark Souls
boss to individually paint them. T_T but maybe you could have made them a little
more distinct in some places by brushing them to alter their appearance?
Overall, the sense of scale in this piece is quite obvious and the creature design
is very solid!

Hehe, I know right? Good thing would be though that it would have some problems to see and catch small preys running around - I think it's far more dangerous to be stomped to death than eaten by such a creature.
True, I try to add a bit more form and contrast to the top of the mountain.
Also a great idea for the trees. I actually wondered how people drawing traditionally deal with a problem like that - they wouldn't draw each tree individually, would they? But probably they just need to find a simpler form which looks kind of like a forest, without drawing each tree - a bit like what you do when you try to draw a close up tree and don't want to draw each and every single leaf...
Anyway. I will try to make those trees a bit less generic.^^
Thanks for your very helpful critique and glad you like it! I added a tree in the foreground in the meantime, to emphasis the bigness of the creature even more.

Ohh, great job with the tree! Really brings out the immensity of the creature in the background!
I see that the mountain is quite brought into view now, too! Cool!
I'm not really sure how traditional artists deal with incredibly complex and detailed foliage...
I'm thinking they take days trying to render out a lot of trees or are just already too good.
No problem! Keep it up!

Uh, thank you! Glad you like the tree as well.
Haha, probably - I'm so happy that I discovered digital art, I really am! Never really liked any of the traditional art directions. ^^

Haha, probably not.
On the bright side, this creature is half a plant itself (the sail-like head performs photosynthesis) and hence compensate some of those trees it killed. But you probably don't want more than a few of those creatures on one planet. ^^

Really tried to give some more attention to composition and values here - think I partly succeeded doing so. ^^

I added a tree in the foreground btw, to hopefully make it even more clear how huge this creature is.
