He was the original Maverick. Dr. Wily created him as a vessel to bring chaos. If Sigma hadn't almost been killed when he was first discovered (Megaman X4) he wouldn't have been infected. The virus was transferred completely to Sigma, and so was called the Sigma Virus.
This doesn't change that Zero is my favorite Megaman character.

Got it. But the nice thing about the X-Buster video is that Zero was freed from the grip of the Virus just by getting slammed into the wall rather than being destroyed.

Both. Omega Zero used the original reworked body of Zero- by "reworked" I mean so humanoid it's hard to tell the difference- which in turn made Omega Zero the Maverick Zero. The main difference between them is the Z-Buster Cannon compared to the Buster Shot that Omega used. The thing that made Omega himself is that the Maverick Virus was running free, thus making him a monster. The Dark Elf only increased his power.
