orogion In reply to invadermayhem [2012-12-23 11:37:27 +0000 UTC]

In certain way it does. You'll have to play the game to find out this characters story arc.

LanaLemony [2012-12-23 02:19:50 +0000 UTC]

ah, I'm kind of disappointed in how hyper-sexualized these women are. I'm not even sure how a skeleton can have lips.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

orogion In reply to LanaLemony [2012-12-23 12:06:44 +0000 UTC]

She doesn't, it's not clear on the drawing I guess, but the lips are painted on it, like you would draw lips with lipstick on a football. The reason why she does it is because of the character she is. I can't reveal anything yet about her story so I can't go deeper into this.
Suffice to say it's a part of her personality.

Also designwise it's nearly impossible to have a skeleton look female and sexy without stylising things. The previous version we had at the studio of this looked like a crossdresser. Simple cuz a realistic skull looks grim and masculine and this was not a design we wanted to go for.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LanaLemony In reply to orogion [2012-12-23 19:08:31 +0000 UTC]

But where the lips are on a skeleton there should be teeth underneath. There is no teeth texture there at all.

I don't really see how "looking like a cross dresser" is an issue. Especially not when you're a skeleton. I mean, they can't even reproduce. You'd think the rules would be a bit different? A woman can decide to wear whatever she wants, but I find it extremely hard to suspend my disbelief long enough to believe that a robot wants nipples. I just see objectifying here and I can't look beyond that to appreciate the parts of the designs that are actually pretty cool.

You keep saying that they have a story behind them, but why choose that story? There's pretty much nothing original anymore about hyper-sexualizing female characters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

orogion In reply to LanaLemony [2012-12-23 23:10:19 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm not gonna get dragged in a discussion here. Mainly since A) I work in contract, my boss has the final word on a design B) I don't write the characters storyline. I just come up with a design that fits with it. C) I can't say much more than what's shown in the drawing because of my NDA.

In that perspective, the crossdresser look didn't fit the profile our writer set up. Simple as that. I can understand you don't see an issue with it, since you just got presented an image out of context ^^
You're right when you say a skeleton can't reproduce. Just as it can't talk as it has not tongue, can't move as it doesn't have muscles, doesn't have a voice as it doens't have vocal cords, can't think as it doesn't have brain, can't see as it doesn't have eyes.
Once you thread that path you're bound to burst your suspension of disbelieve.
Yet in the divinity universe, where DragonCommander takes place, the skeletons are a race with a nation and its own politics.

Anyway, I'm gonna close by saying thank you for voicing your opinion and that I'm sorry that you feel that these concepts are too objectifying and hyper-sexualizing to your taste. I've also learned in all my years that's impossible to cater for everyone.
Additionally, I can garantee that the characters in DragonCommander are more than that and actually have a very deep and rich story.

It's beautiful! I especially love the way you've done the fabric. Very realistic.

I also really love your background - how did you make it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

orogion In reply to Chime-Elf [2012-12-23 11:43:11 +0000 UTC]

Well the background is just a combination of several brushes, tracing and working on top of those. It's function was only to slightly reinforce the themes of the characters at either side.

The robot girl looks a bit ridiculous with the heeled feet (not to mention not realistic, she'd be a fairly useless tool with feet like that) but overall it looks pretty awesome.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

orogion In reply to SpongeMuffin [2012-12-23 11:58:14 +0000 UTC]

Robots made in our own image is completly ridiculous unless they have to function identically as us. Real world shows us robots that nothing more than chip driven arms or cameras on wheels.
However, this concept was made for a high fantasy game so things are bound to become unrealistic, but that's the nature of the setting. And for that reason I enjoy taking a lot of artistic freedom in my designs.
