What a nice monocrhomatic photo and a lovely macro shot of the daisy.
What the other commenter said is true of your photo--it is quite underexposed. To improve this photo without needing to do the post-processing in an editing software, try to use a higher exposure rate or ISO, or a slower shutter speed. These three things will help brighten the photograph.
I also love the composition, it's very soothing.

Thank you very much for the tips. As you might suppose, I haven't been doing this photography thing for very long (this is my first camera), so I'm quite appreciative of any help.

No problem! It takes a bit getting used to. =] Memorize all the functions on your camera and learn about the functions of each! You can consult wikipedia, google, etc.

It might be my crap eyesight, but this one looks darker than the other daisy shot. Maybe too much darker? The lighting on the daisy is good, I just think the surrounding is too dark...but then again, it could just be my eyes

Naw, I doubt it's your eyes. I took these pictures on a day that kept varying between sunny and overcast, and the flowers were positioned under a giant tree, so I got a weird mix of shadow and light the entire time. I might go in and edit these two later, but for now, I was just getting them out of my camera with no post-processing. (The other three photos I added, as you can probably tell, did have some editing, but mostly just in terms of color and contrast. I haven't got the best grasp on Photoshop or Gimp yet.)

I find Gimp utterly confusing. Much prefer Photoshop...

But I, being poor, have only my Gimp. TREAD SOFTLY - for you tread on my . . . Ah hell, it's probably best if you do tread on the cursed thing. I really do need to get Photoshop at some point.

I love you! Yay for Yeats.
Are you a student? Adobe offers an 80% discount to students. I think that makes PS CS5 come out to about $100. If you save little by little, those dreams can become reality. That's how I was able to get InDesign CS5

Really? I'm only going to be a student for about four more months, so I better take adantage of that.
Ha, the Yeats' thing is kind of a running joke I have with a friend. We'll use it whenever we're joking about not having enough money for something. The opening to T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Afred Prufrock" also gets tossed around a lot as a preface to any excursion. Poetry nerdery is so much fun.

It is. Sadly, my friends tend to be philosophy nerds, anime/manga nerds...or raging alcoholics.
I make myself laugh, however, which is all that matters

Ah well, I have quite a few of those types as well. Though at least some of the raging alcoholics have started to calm down this year.
