Description
This is an entry for 's Seduced Contest. I believe it requires a slight explanation.First off, this is intended to portray the mythic German Lorelei, a gorgeous woman who, much like the Greek Sirens, lures sailors to their deaths through her beauty and voice. As to why this fits the contest:
~I'm a huge fan (seduced by, hehe) legends of all sorts, so it seemed appropriate to draw a legend for this, and even more appropriate to draw one involving seduction.
~In this picture, the Lorelei is also seduced by the sea (like so many, including myself) - as she lures sailors forward to the wicked rocks of the shore, so she is lured to forsake the shore and join the sea, as is partly shown in the tendrils of water curling up to drag her from her cliff.
~The men of the ship, in addition to being seduced by beauty, are, in effect, seduced by Death as well, a conscious fascination of many today.
~The Lorelei possesses a beautiful voice, adding to her charms the seduction of music (of which I am a tremendous addict).
~And of course, I hope I've made the drawing fun anough to stare at that it might seduce a few viewers in and of itself.
Phew. I hope that's enough in the way of reasons?

Thank you! I've always wanted to see the Lorelei's supposed hang-out; definately going to make a stop there on my eventual trip about Europe (hehe...whenever that happens...)

Aw, thank you! I wanted there to be something of a new spin to the old story. (Art nouveau-ish ideas + I kept thinking of Arthur Rackham's fairy tale illustrations while drawing. Oddly combatible combo.)

your style - even the borders are wavy, framing the scene beautifully.

Thank you very much! This is actually the first time that I've tried to draw a frame into my own artwork (that I can remember anyhow). Very glad that you liked! (Wee... I did so enjoy drawing all the waves and curlicues, though it made my head spin after a while...

Thank you very much! I am quite a fan of art nouveau; thought it might be interesting to combine aspects of it with a rather antique concept. And I'm very glad you liked the result.

Thank you! It's one of my favorite styles, though I try to incorporate other bits and pieces as well. A bit of Tim Burtonism often, though not so much in this.

Yes! I love Tim Burton, though I admit Sweeney Todd was a bit hard to sit through. I also love that you do traditional art.

Ooo, you likes traditional? I'm glad. I've messed with digital, but it's really not my style.

I always did like that name, even before I knew the connection. Although 'tis a smidge awkward. I wonder if her parents knew where the name came from?
(Hehe. One of my old friends used to do the whole awkward turtle thing quite often. Warm memories. )

WOW! That was so going through my head when I saw it before I even read the title - "It's either a Siren or a Lorelei" ^_^ I love being a mythology geek. This is totally ace, it feels like an old, old piece, but it isn't - IT'S AMAZING. I must fave this and squee.

Yeee! Mythology Geeks of the world untie! Er... unite! One of my first coloring books ever was of mythological creatures (including all the weird ones, like wyverns and basilisks) so I was probably bent toward this sort of subject at an early age. I loves my myths and fairy tales and such.
Oh, and thank you very much, for both comments and fav! Squeeing is a wonderful response.

I wrote the school play of the Odysee I was that sad ^_^ Mythology was my absolute life hehe you can always get a squee from me about myths! Especially awesome work like this!

I don't know from reasons, but I like the drawing a lot. Nice job. What are you using, just pens and ink, or is it done in pencil first?
It's such a reminiscent style of the drawings from the 15th and 16th centuries to me, or maybe those done of engravings you see in books. Remarkable.

Thank you! For this, I did a rough version in pencil first (mainly just the basic outlines of things) and then inked in the details. Occasionally I'm inspired enough not to have to use the pencil, but that's a very rare, happy occasion.
And oh yes, I was certainly going for something between Art Nouveau and engraving-style (funny how well the two disparate centuries can combine).
