Yes, I draw everything on a tablet in Photoshop.

My biggest issue is always shading and knowing where to darken so it looks natural. Advice?

Use references. The way I do it is I draw an image, just simple lines with no real lineweight, then look up references with heavy lighting, then add the lighting as simple shades to my lines. It's not always the case that the reference lighting matches my lines, in which case I'll search for another reference or modify the lighting so it looks nicer even though it's not exactly realistic.

Before I start with the coloring I must have the lighting scheme nailed down. I shade and add highlights according to the black and white reference I created for myself; I don't improvise along the way.

How did you change the line colors like that?

I draw in Photoshop so my lines are on a separate layer than the background layer. I use another layer on top of the lines layer to color it accordingly (hit Alt inbetween the 2 layers and it will limit the top layer workspace to the bottom layer).

Hit Alt between the two layers?

I have a Mac unfortunately

I never used a mac, it might be the "option" key.

Ah ok.

I duplicated the color layer and clipped it to the line layer, I turned down the occupancy to get resuits, I had to make adjustments though.
