Time period: 3100BCE, Ancient Egypt
Designer: ducclord
Fun Facts: Did you know that both upper class men and women wore wigs and makeup in ancient Egypt? Of course, they were a sign on wealth and nobility. Earlier period wigs were made from real human hair, but they were eventually replaced with palm fibers.
Egyptian Faience is a very vibrantly blue self glazing ceramic developed in 5000BCE, and is the oldest known glazed ceramic ever! The iconic turquoise/blue hue is easily recognized in many ancient Egyptian jewelry and figurines. A great example of the beauty of Egyptian faience is the series of Hippopotamus figurines, the most famous, "William", can be found in the Metropolitam Museum of Art.
2. The Messenger (Seeker) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 450BCE, Ancient Greece
Designer: 4ey8wf3r
Note from designer: Since this was a Seeker I wanted to pick something that was known for its stone, and Ancient Greece came to mind immediately. Somehow it ended up as being heavily Hermes from Greek Mythology inspired but I think the idea came out really well. In mythology Hermes is the messenger of the gods and a guider of souls to the underworld, well known for his winged sandals that allowed him to quickly traverse between the lands of the mortal and divine. Along with being a psychopomp Hermes is also known as a trickster god, leading to a mischievous side of the myth. His main symbol is actually the caduceus, a winged staff entwined by two snakes, one representing the world of the living and the other the land of the dead. To continue the theme of being double-sided, this Seeker has water carvings of snakes over their arms. I went with a more muscular build to fit with Ancient Greece's standards for Olympian men. The Seeker sports a free-flowing toga that is easy to move in and a bright red scarf that flies behind. This Seeker comes with three dutiful Pebblings that assist it with sending messages between others, along with a dutiful Slabster that acts as a badge.
3. Lady of the Pond (Guide) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 600CE, Tang Dynasty China
Designer: 4ey8wf3r
Note from designer: I was drawn entirely to the idea of drawing a hanfu, a traditional style of clothing named after the Han Chinese people. My first design was not clear enough so I went back and revised the type of hanfu used. There are many styles to choose from so I had to choose wisely. My first one looked too much like a kimono so I redid it to read easier as Chinese. Hanfu origins date back to the Qin Dynasty (200 BCE) and lasted to the Qing Dynasty (1600 CE). This specific one is inspired by the Tang dynasty, a time where China was a unified economic trade hub and the country was at its peak of prosperity. The clothing is characterized by being light and flowing, with bright colors and see-through materials. It's divided into three main sections: a top, a bottom, and a sash that divides them at the waist. - I went with lotus flower accessories and water-themed patterns. The deep red of the outfit was picked to stand out against the large amount of leaves. They were designed with the idea of appearing before you from a pond, a secret on their ruby lips and a coquettish expression asking you to follow.
4. Barock Rocks (Seeker) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 1600CE, Baroque Period
Designer: Orvaentadopts
Note from the designer: I went to visit Italy in 2017, after taking a course in Baroque art. If you go around Rome and step into any of the multiple chapels, you will see the remnants of Baroque in every corner! My personal favorite is the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican City - the interior is just absolutely stunning. The mix of marble, gold and bronze iconic in Baroque architecture is quite possibly the most aesthetically pleasing blend of materials I can think of. For this specific Seeker (yes, I also admit I did choose the Baroque period because of the pun), I was inspired by Bernini's sculptures, the intricacy and blending of multiple organic forms.
Fun fact: In Bernini's Four Rivers fountain, one of the figures (the Rio de Plata sculpture) is leaning back and holding a hand up in surprise/shock. It is coincidentally facing the chapel designed by Borromini, one of Bernini's rivals at the time, and is rumored to be a slight at his nemesis' architectural work.
5. Pirate King (Guide) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 1700CE, Golden Age of Piracy
Designer: Koicrow
Fun fact: Matelotage was same sex unions between pirates, somewhat akin to same sex marriage, and was an openly common and accepted thing! Since pirates were mainly men, and spending endless months on the seas with one another creates a very intimate bond between crewmates. Matelotage can be fraternal or romantic, but it gives the pirates something to fight for. Or well, at the very least if one dies then the other will inherit their share of gold! Yohoho!
6. Dapper Flapper (Seeker) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 1920CE
Designer: StudioMaz
Fun fact: In the 1920s, the Women's rights movement was in full swing, and women had just been given the right to vote. This was partly due to the fact that during World War 1, many women joined the workforce due to the lack of men from the war. The 1920s was a time where women began to really rebel against their traditionally set "roles" and dressed up in fanciful ways, partied in jazz clubs, drank alcohol and smoked, actions that would be severely looked down on a decade ago.
7. House Husband (Seeker) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 1950CE
Designer: rockavampy
Fun fact: In the aftermath of World War 2, there was an economical boom, which in turn caused a population boom (ie Baby Boomers). We all know about the infamous "How to be a good housewife" articles and posters from this era right? These so called "Housewife rules" were even taught in school! Have Dinner ready. Prepare yourself. Don't be dull. Don't complain. Clean up the House. Take care of the children. Etc etc, wouldn't it be funny to have the roles reverse, even for a little bit of lighthearted humor?
8. Boogie Wonderland (Seeker) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 1970CE
Designer: ducclord
Fun fact: The 1970s was the place to be if you're into funky dance moves and disco balls! Have fun dancing the Hustle, the YMCA and the iconic disco finger among others with your parents, you'll sure have a blast!
Did you know? The original name for the disco ball was the "Myriad Reflector". Fancy!
9. Electric Stardust (Guide) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 1980CE
Designer: rockavampy
Fun fact: Electronic dance music and synthpop first gained popularity in the 80s, with technological advancements. Computers were used in the creation of music, which was suddenly made it much more accessible and open for more people to make and explore. Coincidentally (or maybe it was all planned, GASP), 1981 marked the year that MTV was created, which in turn made the concept of music videos much more popular than before! Early music videos took advantage of color filmography and were often very bright, contrasting and full of fun!
The debut song aired by MTV was "Video killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. How fitting XD
10. Y2K (Guide) >>comment thread <<
Time period: 2000CE
Designer: honeydebt
Fun fact: What even is Y2K? A fact I (orva) actually didn't know until researching for this fun fact paragraph haha. Firstly, Y2K literally stands for the Year 2000. What made it memorable was the Y2K "bug", in which computer programs were programmed to write years into 2 digits rather than 4 digits (ie 1997 would be "97"). People feared that "00" would be interpreted as 1900 rather than 2000, and when the new years came around all the computers would travel back in time! (source: www.britannica.com/technology/… )
Anyways, fashion in the 2000s was whack. And does anyone remember getting their first flip phone? I remember not having one and being incredibly jealous at people who did. It was totally a status symbol.
