Description
The Legend of Grettir, Icelandic Saga!......or something like that.
This is concept art for a McHozers future project. Nordic sagas don't typically have anti-heroes hunting trolls, but such are the sagas of Grettir.
Constructive critiques please!

Are you going to make a comic of Grettir's saga, or was this just practice? I'm taking an Old Norse class, and I've had it in my mind that if anyone needed a comic, Grettir did. I want to make a short comic of the fight with Glรกmr, and I was just wondering if maybe you'd had the same idea.
This is an awesome drawing, too! Very close to how I imagined Grettir. And the action is simply stunning!

Yes, that was the idea! However, it was my writing partner's idea to do a Grettir comic. As far as I know, it is on hold for the moment while we are both pursuing other projects. I drew this up a while ago for promotional purposes. If you are interested, I can put you in touch with him to discuss it.
Thank you very much for the kind words.

Wow, do I love this piece. For one, I am a fan of action and this is drooling with action! Ya, kick their butts! Really awesome detail in this piece. I love how each ... gremlin(?) has a different pose and expression. Something tells me you took a lot of time on this one?

Thanks. Trolls they be. Surprisingly, this didn't take me very long....well, at least by my standards. I tend to dwell on each picture just a little too long.

Thanks, man! It isn't easy...or rather it's sometimes just a fluke and a bit of luck that it turns out alright.

You see this? This right here? This is why you're my master. -_-
So.... advanced critique eh? Oy, that's gonna be difficult! But I searched around and I noticed... his pectorals. They seem to small, as if they cut off too high. It seems to be only by a smidgen. Oh yeah, and the ear seems too low. But those are anatomical nitpicks, let me critique on the actual important things....
I'm honestly not sure how to improve the scene, because in all honesty, the concept, the execution... everything looks just so! I'm assuming some kind of text would be placed where the bare spot is? But this is coming from an amateur, so... you probably don't wanna take my word for it. ^_^;

oh boy.... teasing me again, are ya?
Thanks for pointing out the pecs. Good eye! I fixed it, or at least I tried. Yeah, the ear is a little off too, but I'm just gonna say it's his birth defect (which is really my laziness defect .)
And the blank space... I was gonna put some kinda dark skies there, but seeing as the picture is so busy already, I had to let it go and leave it as it is. Next time, I'll plan it out better. I still stink at planning out bg's ahead of time.

Thanks dude! I forgot to leave room for a good spray of blood from his mouth and nose. It's probably gonna stay as pencils as far as my effort is concerned. I may ink it for practice if I ever find time. I'd love for someone else to colour it though.

That is really amazing. The motion and detail is astounding~<3 I love the expressions on their faces. It really makes the whole picture more real.

Thanks!! I'm glad the scene translates well as action. Fighting grimaces come easy to me (probably from reading all those Conan comics when I was a kid.) It's the more subtle facial expressions that are tough to capture.

Welcome! It really does~ ^^ I find facial expressions to be my strong point, for me it's the body that's hard to draw. XD;

Oshouki In reply to CrimsonNightshade [2009-02-10 15:26:58 +0000 UTC]
I see. Have you ever tried thinking about the body as basic geometric shapes? Like arms/legs as cylinders, torso as rectangular blocks?

CrimsonNightshade In reply to Oshouki [2009-02-10 21:34:00 +0000 UTC]
I've tried it, but it never seems to work out well for me. XD; I mean, I can draw them well in basic static (boring) poses, but the more fluid and exciting (real) poses are really hard for me...

Some of my ex-boyfriends remind me of trolls, so I'm not normally a troll fan lol, but this is so darn awesome!
The proportions and action of it is perfect.

Thanks!

Lol I could have used that guy 20... err.. a few years back (whistles sinnocently)
I think the worst troll was the guy that thought rolling the dice in Dungeon and Dragons could actually REALLY predict the future.
Yes, it was time to run as fast as my feet could carry me from that one lol

Wow! I love the captured motion. It looks so astounding; I'm really fond of the shading. Traditional is probably my absolutely favourite genre of art. Love the fine detail as well. I really wouldn't know where to even start for giving any kind of crit on this. Overall, the appearance is fantastic...maybe something more could be done with the sky? Or is it supposed to be that way?
Anyway, again this looks so good. Awesome work. Hopefully with practice, one day I'll be at this level.

Thanks. I left the sky blank because the whole thing already looks so busy. Otherwise I was gonna put in a smoke/mist filled dark sky. But it was poor planning on my part. And thanks for your effort to crit!

NGomesS In reply to Calamshell [2009-01-31 19:56:08 +0000 UTC]
a great idea would be even more gore, more trolls coming up there, a cloudy sky wouldn't fit with the atmosphere, some dust smoke would be great

Oshouki In reply to NGomesS [2009-02-06 05:03:10 +0000 UTC]
Good suggestion. I was gonna put some drifting battlefield smoke or mist in there, but decided the pic was already too busy.
