Description
Not a particularly speedy Edaphosaurus, that is, but a none too neatly detailed Edaphosaurus I did rather quickly to try out an idea I had for sailbacked pelycosaur coloration. Originally I was going to make it a Dimetrodon, but then I realized the colors might not make a lot of sense for an apex predator. As a result the sail is highly speculative what with the base of the spines buried in muscle and the tips free from the sail (inspired by the way a lot of Edaphosaurus spines seem to be missing the tip, although this could be postmortem breakage).Related content

Good ol' Ed doesn't get as much love as Dimetrodon... He deserves much more!

Interesting glowing effect, as if backlit by the sun, or as if it can fluoresce its sail.Β Which might be an interesting, if unlikely, use for it.Β Imagine pelycosaurs with billboards on their backs.

I was going for something like an anole's dewlap. Granted, in nature under less than perfect lighting conditions it would probably look duller and more muted.

Man, you have been a drawing machine lately! Mind If I ask what you use to make these pieces?

I managed to acquire a cheap Wacom tablet and a more recent version of Photoshop. I used to have a Wacom Graphire ages ago but it wasn't being supported anymore, and the cheap off-brand replacement I got didn't really work at all.

awesome
i really like edaphosaurus though it has always confused me if this was a synapsid or a true reptile

Thanks! Edaphosaurus and Dimetrodon should be easy enough to recognize if you're familiar with them, but the fact that there were sailbacked archosaurs and even amphibians makes me wonder what I'm looking at when I come across a sailbacked taxon I don't know yet.

your welcome
i do remember these 2 as i remember walking with monsters and i had a dinosaur book with both of them in for some stupid reason
i just don't know if edaphosaurus was a mammal like reptile or not is all

Oh. Edaphosaurus and Dimetrodon are both basal stem-mammals (or using out-dated lingo, mammal-like reptiles). They weren't actual reptiles but part of the same lineage as monotremes, kangaroos and us.

awesome thanks
basal stem mammals does sound cooler than mammal like reptiles, yet again since they were kind of both i feel like "reptammals" also fits
i find it super cool when i hear how we are that close to such an odd animal
