Description Another commission! This was a little tougher than the norm since this isn't at all like the stuff I usually do. But I'm happy with how it turned out.

Yeah, you should be happy because it turned out great!

He looks so muscly and tough and intimidating! You did a great job with the shapes of his figure and using the shadows to carve out his muscles. The muscles kinda "pop" and have this imposing sense of mass to them -- he really looks strong. That his costume is so skimpy and shows off his muscles makes him look even more tough and intimidating -- like, I imagine him just SPRINTING towards me in a fight and I'd be so scared because he looks dangerous and strong. I love that you give him that presence.

I like the attention to you pay to the details of the costume. The fur lining of his boots, belt and shoulder guards, the way the straps wrap around his wrists and boots. The costume just feels right -- the design of it. You make skimpy costumes seem so practical! haha

I feel super weird commenting on it, but filling out his loincloth a bit more than just a flat waist-shape makes him seem more intimidating to. Like...as a whole, his costume gives off this feel of his intimidating presence and beefy physique being just BARELY contained, and that seems like an extension of that. Guh, I feel so weird commenting on that but it occurred to me.

...anyway. His face is so great! The glare in the eye, the folds of the eyelid, the heavy, furrowed brow -- I like how the cyclops has an imposing face to match his imposing physique. I hadn't really thought about it before, but it's kinda interesting the different ways you can design a cyclops' face and I like the direction you took here. Also, I love the wrinkles on his lips -- they make his scowl seem a bit more gnarled and scary and otherworldly.

Awesome job with this fella! He has such an intimidating and dangerous presence! : )

Thanks! And you don't have to feel weird commenting about that. XD If the crotch area looks super wrong on a picture it can really throw the whole thing off. When I was in HS I had no idea how to draw guys, so I'd draw the line separating the legs waaaay too high. So it made them look like they had nothing there and was awkward and I totally got made fun of for it. The commissioner wanted him more filled out than I had sketched initially and I think that was the right call cuz it does look more balanced.

Haha, yeah, it's true. When I was in school it was more a danger to put any kind of emphasis on the crotch; putting too much attention into the fly of the pants would get you teased.

But that's kids looking to tease you for whatever, who don't care about art and think trying to practice anatomy or figures is weird.

What was worse was a time in a Digital Art class in college, when I made an awful little comic, and one character was a girl wearing khaki-colored pants a bit darker than her skintone, but apparently not darker enough. The teacher was like, "it's good, but don't you think that's a bit inappropriate," pointing to the handful of lines at her crotch, where the wrinkles of the shorts and the fly/zipper line met...apparently she thought I'd blatantly drawn a pizza delivery girl pantsless. I was actually kind of offended she'd assume I did that. >_>

Anyway, yeah, thanks for not teasing me for commenting on that! : )

Lol? I'm not sure how your teacher thought that was a pantsless girl. It's like... look at it a moment and figure it out before jumping to that conclusion. Lady parts look different than lines indicating folds in clothing.

When I was really starting to try to work on anatomy I had so much anxiety around it cuz I realized it came out better to draw the body first THEN the clothes which means you gotta know how to draw the form naaaaked, even if certain areas aren't detailed. So I worried that people would think I was weird, then I actually drew some nudes and REALLY worried. But it was for naught.

Nowadays you draw some nips though and people can't smash the favorite/retweet/reblog/like button fast enough.

I know, I was kinda blown away.

On the topic of weird things art teachers said...(and forgive me if I've told this story before; I remember we talked about art classes before and I'm bad about telling the same stories over and over.) I had one teacher who got thrown into teaching intro/2D design. He was really the ceramics/sculpture teacher and hadn't taught 2D in a long time. He was a little odd but nice enough, but one day he throws out this question:

"So if you make art on the computer, is it really YOU making the art or is it just the COMPUTER making the art."

Which...is so flabbergasting. lol

Yeah, I know what you mean -- non-artist types can make a big deal out of just drawing figures before you put clothes on them. =__=
