Description
I don't know how late I am to the party on this one, though I thought it would be fun to contribute to anyways. To me, it's always pretty interesting to explore what I feel inspired by, or what I want to be as an artist, but the hardest part is figuring out WHICH people / works affected me the most. It took me a while to think but here they are:Terry Gilliam Cartoons - My favorite skits to watch in Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and I believe these shorts are what changed my view on what animation could be.
Kinnikuman - Even when a majority of its characters are fan-submitted, there’s always a sense of creativity and variety to its massive cast (Planetman anyone?).
Ren and Stimpy - A childhood favorite of mine, and one of those shows that feels like it embraces its cartoony nature - both with its tone and visual style.
Salvador Dali - Always when I look at his paintings, I feel like I’m entering another person’s dream, or perhaps another world in general.
Eiichiro Oda - Other than the fact that he created one of the biggest anime series in the world, his work is always such a treat to look at (especially his color spreads).
Genndy Tartakovsky - One of the best western cartoon creators I’ve ever seen, mostly due to his signature of relying on visuals to tell a story.
Ben Martin - The most recent artist I got into, though I love his slick-yet-zany style so much that I had to include him. If you’re curious, check out his page here: (totalnonsense89.deviantart.com ), trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
Henri Rousseau - Ever since I was a kid, I was always mesmerized by his many jungle paintings. In fact, I even devoted a few school projects to him just to see more of his work.
Jamie Hewlett - Whether his drawings are traditional or digital, Gorillaz or a comic, there’s always a sense of “pushing the boundary” when it comes to Jamie’s work.
Hiroyuki Imaishi - The creator of some of my favorite anime series (Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, Dead Leaves), whose work contains some of the most ambitious animations I’ve seen in ANY series.
Soul Eater - The anime that got me into anime (along with Bobobo), and one I’m still into to this day for its stylized / slightly urban aesthetic.
James Turner - With his colorful characters, quirky sense of humor, and surreal atmosphere, James is one of those comic artist I feel deserves more attention.
