Description More cold formed convex discs, this time welded to flat squares in a bracelet.
there is a seafoam greenish blue glass bead set in the center link. The links are 1+ 1/4 wide.
Welded stainless steel.
I definitely need to do another bracelet like this, but next time preform the squares to the curvature of my wrist. Somehow I failed to remember to do that on this one. I may make this into a choker by adding more links.

Absolutely.

Been checking out the "new" necklines in popular women's clothing...rather linear, go figure, when we're all about circles... a straight line accross the top of the breast or an angle from the neck to the armpit. I'm sure some Japanese designer will figure this out before I do...but maybe there's a reason and a harmony.

I personally find more "harmony" in naked, unadorned, women's bodies ,but then ,
I'm all about form over surface decoration...

this would be fascinating with inter-changeable squares with different convexes and whatnot set on them... could be quite interesting to see what felt 'right' to the wearer day by day.

Love the piece, will be beautiful as either a bracelet or choker!

Hey David,
How good of you to visit.
I enjoy seeing yours as well, the level of craftsmanship is always exemplary.
I am not a gem person and diamonds are my least favorite I confess, but your works refresh my view and make me realize it is but a silly prejudice. It is so obvious you love diamonds and so the way in which they are displayed in your piece is a loving touch. Just the type of treatment I need to see to get past my conditioning...

carpe0diem In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-09-30 23:46:36 +0000 UTC]

Its funny you say that about the diamonds. I like them but I am a much bigger fan of colored gemstones. I like using diamonds for accents but I really like color. Colored stones do not sell real well for us here but diamonds do. That is the main reason you see a lot of diamonds in many of my pieces. People just like the "BLING" I guess.

I think it could be good as a choker, but I'm worried about those little connector rings getting caught in hair.
They were such a chore to mount.

Wyrdhaven In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-09-30 08:01:28 +0000 UTC]

It would work for someone with short hair. I'd just make it clear that they could get caught. I do that with my copper chains, since they aren't soldered closed.

ou8nrtist2 In reply to Wyrdhaven [2008-09-30 08:18:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm thinking about not using rings but possibly curved rivets.
Those rings disturb the visual a bit for me,besides the catching-the-hair-thing.

I'm the one keeping the house running and building Dreaming Dragon Designs, design and business-wise.

I have a million questions about this ALT thing...
My generation was raised to believe that only criminals, con men and schizophrenics would have an alternate personality, but I realize in its present application it's not about being necessarily duplicitous,it more about expressing another side...After all we're all multi dimensional beings are we not ? So this allows others as well to relate to the personality they prefer. What else am I missing here. The whole concept is alien to me and I'm so pathetically unhip and unschooled in these "virtual"contrivances. But I have an open mind and I'm a quick study.I think I have the basic concept but perhaps you could fill in the blanks for me...What other reasons are there for projecting an Alt ?

While I have used aliases online to hide identity, in the case of DA, it's about differing types of art that I'm interested in.
My traditional account, ~AbstractMage is only for my drawings, my *LadyBlacksword account is for fractal art. This one is for my shared business of artisan crafts work, and ~TheLadyandTheDragon is for our shared photo account. (Shared because we sometimes share cameras and didn't want to worry about figuring out who shot what on those occasions.)
Outside of DA, I've normally used aliases in situations where I didn't want my real name broadcast to people I didn't trust the motivations of. There are a lot of cool people online, and at the same time, there's plenty of people who are either criminals or just creeps. In that case, it's about safety, just like not giving your full name to someone you don't trust in public.
I also use the name "Murri" in situations where I wish to project the "other side" you mentioned, the self-defined-by-self, not history. Generally in pagan settings where I want the name I selected for myself used in place of the name selected by my parents. And, honestly, I like my self-selected name better on some days. At least I don't use something like "Starhawk" that sounds like it came from a book.

One thing I don't do is use an alias that is designed to hide my id by creating a totally new, seemingly real-world id. I don't think I'm Napoleon, nor do I make up a "christian" name complete with plausible last name. That would be odd for me, and dishonest in a way I don't really want to be.

Thank you for the clarification,
Then I have another tech question for your alt...
If I shoot a very short video (15 secs) of a piece ,can I upload that to DA ?
My camera will shoot short video sequences which would be very helpful for some pieces that are hard to visually decipher with only one angle (as in a still shot)...

Wyrdhaven In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-10-05 04:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Not unless your work with video is arty enough to pass DeviantArt's film submission application process. (Which looks like a pain in the rear to me)
That said- If you can turn it into an animated .gif, you can submit it to one of the animation categories. Or, you could host it on a remote corner of your personal website, and link it to your artist comments.

Btw, you've given me an interesting idea of what to do with an odd shaped piece of macasser ebony I was given. I've just got to see if it's thick enough to make a wasabi bowl out of. Especially since I'm planning a pair of chopsticks that would match already. Now I just need to get these commissions off my bench so I can get to all these ideas I have bouncing around.....

Ebony is such an incredible medium to carve,
It's absolutely gorgeous when sanded and finished,
but remember what I said months ago about it's brittleness. It's not as forgiving as other woods. Don't use a vise. When I want that same jet black color but the application can't be out of a brittle material (like a belt knife handle),I choose AFRICAN BLACKWOOD, but you have to make sure you get heartwood (where it's really almost as black as ebony).

Wyrdhaven In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-10-06 02:38:30 +0000 UTC]

Wyrdhaven In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-10-06 03:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Not as far as I can tell. I think it's a local name from the area of Africa. [link] There's a pic yoinked from google of a guitar made from Macasser. Here's a bowl: [link] and another: [link]
What I have looks more like what the two bowls are made of.

ou8nrtist2 In reply to Wyrdhaven [2008-10-06 05:36:49 +0000 UTC]

God ,it's sooo beautiful,
It also comes from India.
But Makassar, (Macassar, Mangkasar)the name , is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi,an island in Indonesia known for it's rich coffee.Yum.
The wood of this ebony is also brittle like the very black one so be careful...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wyrdhaven In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-10-06 10:50:48 +0000 UTC]

I really love the pattern....Just wish I could find some thicker pieces for more dimensional work.

Thanks for the info, from where ever you dug it up!
(I remember liking the Indonesian coffee I had awhile back...Yum indeed.)

I've honestly not had much trouble with the brittleness of any of the ebony I've worked so far. But I've found that I almost never use a vice when I work with wood. Certainly not when carving, just a suede leather sandbag for that. I did find that a very fine tooth was useful for sawing it, to prevent tearing and splintering when going across the grain, but it sands quite nicely, and takes a nice rich polish, especially with my special beeswax based buffing compound. This is one place where the fact that I carve with burrs, and not knives makes my life easier.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ou8nrtist2 In reply to Wyrdhaven [2008-10-06 16:20:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes,
Using Burrs on air tools or electric will be allot more gentle on the wood.
It turns quite well too.
I made some sword and knife handles from the black ebony in the late eighties and had a terrible time because there was flexing on the tang of these edged weapons and the ebony couldn't handle it. So that's when I discovered African Blackwood and used it to advantage.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wyrdhaven In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-10-07 02:29:32 +0000 UTC]

I imagine Ebony would have problems when pinned in place and flexed.
Might work well if you used an enclosed tang design, and used thin dyed leather or black rubber spacers at each end to give the ebony breathing room. A threaded butt cap on a steel tang would be best, and it might not be going too far to lightly rubber coat/dip the tang itself. The hole in the ebony cylinder would need to be a little less snug than some would think. Another option to solve the problem would be making the same style, but with alternating 3/4 to 1 inch wide ebony "washers" and 1/16th inch rubber washers, with rounded edges, just a fraction larger than the ebony. Neat "ribbed" look that way, and a naturally no-slip grip. I'd probably go one step further and give the ebony pieces a slightly concave profile all the way around. Maybe even carve them to have a bamboo stem's leaf node notches, especially on something long like a two handed sword grip.

I know, you weren't asking for a design fix to a project long ago finished.
I do have a little african blackwood, but it's some odd shaped ends and scraps given to me by another. Most of it is smaller and has rough/natural edges/holes and some of it has rather nasty cracks. I have decided that the thinner piece of Macasser won't work for a wasabi bowl.
