this is killer.

I designed some silver chop sticks in wax, but have never got around to casting. They had to be done in two pieces due to the lenght.

Maybe this will inspire me to cast them.

Was it such a complicated shape that you couldn't fabricate it in silver instead of casting ?Or was it that you expect to do multiples...

Well silver is tricky, hand fabrication is not like the harder metals you work with. But your question has me thinking about hand fabrication. It really depends on the level of detail i suppose. Your level of detail is different than the level of detail a jeweler applies to metal. Technique wise, I am stuck somewhere in the middle.

I can always fabricate. I probably can get as much detail out of hand shaping silver and hand shaping wax these days. However, If I take the time spent getting detail in wax, I get to reproduce the work of course. Debatably, wax is also faster in terms of producing detail. Sort of anyways. It is a lot easier to work with dental tools on wax, than using flexshafts and burs on metal.

I will have to try to do a fabricated set soon. It should be interesting.

I'm obviously a fabricator at heart,
But several of my pieces were done in wax as well:
[link]
I guess it depends on what it's final service or application will be.
I am currently investigating having my recent little octopus cast in silicon bronze, but for such a complicated mold I think I'll just have the body cast and freehand the tentacles from bronze rod and weld them on. That way they'll all be one of a kind pieces but having the body done already will save a great deal of time...

Nicely done I have been thinking of making myself a pair with animal heads forged into the ends but haven't gotten to that yet amids all the other things. I like the twist pattern you put on them.

I just got done in the studio for the day and I explored some very cool new innovations pattern-wise.
I made some samples which I'll peruse overnight in my leisure time, but I can already see expanding the offerings of these lovely patterns to other pieces of jewelry.
I think you'll see what I'm talking about soon.
Animal heads sound like a great idea for a finial, but man, working on that tiny scale forging is such a challenge !
I'd really like to see you go for it...

I will sometime but I think it will require some fine punches and such that I will have to make, and a lot of quick movements on my part. Dang heat

My choice of technique for that would be use the Mig to build up a lump then grind away what I didn't want and sculpt the form with die grinders, but that's just me. My old man would have used this same technique but preferred the oxy-acetylene torch to the Mig gun...Each to his own I'd say.
It's a cool idea .

Interesting way to go about it. I don't have much experience with welding equipment, and I don't have die grinders. So my aproch to it must be a little more tailored to my situation.

Its always interesting to think about the different ways you could go about getting the same results.

ou8nrtist2 In reply to ipneto [2008-07-24 21:59:55 +0000 UTC]

True,
And I'll bet because that's your preferred technique ,you're probaly pretty good at it.
I'm actually used as a resource for many artisans in my area because I explore and exploit new technologies for art purposes.
Incidentally, die grinders are cheap, light, efficient and cut work time considerably. It does require an initial outlay for a compressor however(minimum $1500.oo),but it's perfect for a garage or small studio. We have a Harbor Freight store nearby which is where I get the majority of my airtools spending on the average about 10.oo to 20.oo each for sale items. At that rate if they last for only one job ,it's still worth it...

Well as of yet I am still learning. It is one of those if I had the money I might invest in stuff but sence I have plenty more time than money it only sutes that I take the free steel I scrounge and make it into tools to make things. Maybee some day I will have the money to put into some of the other tools that I can't make that speed up the process. I still have a long way to go before I realy even have a decent basic setup. Well time to go order some steel so I can fabricate the anvil aparatis I have been planning for a while. Makes my anvil mobile yet stable.

I love those, I would buy two pairs in an instant if I wasn't a starving artist!
they are beautiful, and I've always had issues with wood chopsticks grossing me out because of the whole "food schtuffs seeping in" thing- these would be more sanitary!

great job, love the pattern on both, but I think my pair would be the lower of the 2.

Thank you Meryl,
They are really a delight to eat with and the visual enhances the experience.
Don't be embarrassed about the starving artist bit...LOL
I know EXACTLY what you mean and often joke that I can't afford my own work...Ha. But seriously,I'm just starting to get out of that rut after 20 years of labor so it sort of comes with paying your dues...
The coolest thing would be if you made your own set.

the only kind of metal work I can do right now is maille, though I do know how to do silversmithing. again it comes down to the money thing. can't afford any tools.

ugh, I think I'll just have to take some kind of boring grunt work I am over qualified for (just got my bachelor's in theatre- useless degree) to make some money so I can get things like supplies and tools.

heck, if you were anywhere near pittsburgh I would love to learn more about metal work, it's always fascinated me.

ou8nrtist2 In reply to muirgheal85 [2008-07-23 19:51:32 +0000 UTC]

I'm as far away from Pittsburgh as you could possibly imagine, both physically and psychically.LOL
But ,you know I used to teach in the U.C. Berkeley Art Dept.(in my capacity as a sculpture technician)(staff position) and I actually found women to be better suited for certain types of Techniques like gas welding and Tig welding than guys. I theorize it's something to do with refined motor coordination starting early (like applying makeup).
Maybe you could find an able metal working craftsman in your area that you might apprentice with.
But in regards to the grunt job,I can totally relate. I worked in a trailer manufacturing factory for 6 years and took 5 % of every paycheck and put it in a fund for tools. At the end of my tenure there I had enough tools to start a studio in my garage.

Yes, but they're too heavy and the the polished surface is too slippery to hold hair.
I make some smaller lighter hair sticks in stainless that seem to work well.
I'll get around to posting those eventually...

I'm completely committed right now to completing the Burning Man Medallions commission(250 pcs)Arghhh !
These are for my bestist patron and I'm LATE... yikes (it's next month)FUCK !
I'll post this years model when I get the majority of them done.
I've got a friend visiting this weekend who's offered to give me a hand with the prep work,(pre-polishing parts etc.)
Each heart shaped medallion (in stainless )has a red glass bead welded INSIDE so when you hold it up to the light the burning man symbol (which is laser-cut),is lit up...An inch and a half in diameter with 2 welds on each one...

I also do metal hairsticks in Sterling Silver and some in copper. Check my journal for my Etsy link.

Not that I wouldn't give non-art related body parts for a set like this but lighter....
