Description
These are wall sconces destined to have LOW VOLTAGE UPLIGHTING. They are designed to be installed on either side and illuminate a painting for my client. They are fabricated from 1/8th inch stainless steel with a backing plate of 16 gauge.Width is 14".I now hand off the sconces to another tech who will install the lights and wiring.
My client had originally seen my Nautilus sculpture:

and asked if sconces made to look like a sectioned nautilus would be possible for me to make. Apparently they are.
I had to enlarge the size somewhat in order to make room for the inside lighting fixtures. This will be LOW VOLTAGE lighting. The transformer as well as the wiring will be hidden in the wall.
There are two keyhole shaped mounting holes on the back of each fixture to mount to the wall and keep them stable even during an earthquake...Two mounting holes will also mean the electrician won't have to worry about balancing his wiring and lamps inside the shell. These are all features one must consider with FUNCTIONAL or DECORATIVE ARTS.
I still adhere to the mantra "form follows function".
Update July 2010:
It turns out the low voltage lighting is way more expensive and requires a lot more hardware. The guy doing the wiring was able to put candelabra fixtures inside the sconces with 40 watt miniature bulbs. Also they are now rigged with touch sensitive sensors and three levels of brightness...

Indeed,great stuff.
Although I find Art Deco just a bit too geometric for my taste.I'm in love with Art Nouveau...

OMG, those are wonderful! If you ever decide to make more, keep me in mind!
BTW - did your client consider compact florescent bulbs?

glad to hear they will be installed separately. For me they deserve to be a feature in their own right

I am delivering them today to the electrician ...
We're still considering LED's as an option.

I don't think the LED's would provide quite enough light for illumination of a painting except when it is pitch black. But maybe. The new bright ones are pretty bright but still you need a bunch of them to stack up to one little low voltage light. I think they need a few more years work on that technology.

The client has changed her mind and it now will be installed in another room just for ambient up-lighting.
Because of recent innovations,LED's now come in an infinite variety of colors and intensities. They use little energy and give off very little heat. For those reasons they will be ideal for this project...

Yes I can see them for ambient lighting they will be perfect. They are very cool sconces and I'm sure they will look outstanding installed. But then I would not expect any less from you.

Many frenetic discussions last night...
It's now back to small wattage incandescent.

She's trying to save money,so i can understand.
A small candelabra size bulb socket would fit well, not be too hot,and project the kind of warm light with low wattage that she wants...
