I used to make little rings like that out of solder when i was a kid and my dad had a little workbench thing. i would get a few inches, tangle it all up, flatten it on the concrete with a hammer, then curl it around my finger. it looked pretty much like this, just smaller. lol

That's what the patina did to it.
I was surprised really,at how radically different the feeling of the piece was NOT being shiny polished like most of my stainless jewelry items.

*drool* This is beautiful. I love the design and that fact that it is one continuous line creating a 3d piece. My eyes keep following the line and wonderful curves.

Not sure if the photo is as good as it can be...LOL
It was a difficult object to shoot to capture the reality of that one contiguous line.
Also the coloration made it's 3 dimensionality more difficult to represent.

I can imagine how difficult this would be to photograph. You still got the point across.

Not that I know of. I just use the timer so that I'm not touching the camera when the picture is taken.

I never time how long something takes to make.
I am usually lost in the creative process to the point that I lose track of the awareness of time.
I think that's usually an indication of how much pleasure it is.

2dazed In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-01-27 19:15:14 +0000 UTC]

Hadn't thought of it that way, but no, I don't time myself either. Who wants to feel like they're doing a chore all the time?

I sorta get weirded out by speed painting, and the constant listing of how many hours or sometimes minutes it took the person to make the "art". I guess it's just a contemporary social commentary.

Just had to jump in on the middle of your conversation here....

I agree with you. A lot of potters are worried about how fast they can throw a pot. Now I understand that this way of thinking comes from a time when potters made their money from production. The more cups you can crank out in an hour, the more money you are technically making in that hour. However, I'm not a production potter, and don't really intend on ever making 2 of the same thing. I too get lost in the process and lose all track of time and reality while I'm working. Especially when throwing on the wheel - there's something increidbly therapuetic about it. I'm glad to hear that someone else feels the same way about their work.

And also it seems rather missing the point don't-ya-know,to make the emphasis be on the short amount of time it took to digitally paint.
I mean who gives a shit how long it took...LOL
Is it a good painting?
That used to be the most important thing.
It just makes me think that if the emphasis is on speed, then they aren't really appreciating their talent, which I find sad...
Or maybe I'm missing something about it. I should talk to one of these artists. There must be a dozen or more on DA.
It could be that there's something other than a competitive motivation in it.

You are preaching to the choir! I would be curious to hear the responses if you ask some of the artists around here.

The more I think on it,the more I think I'm missing "the point".

2dazed In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2008-01-27 21:45:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. Yes, I can see that. Lol!

I never have the time to sit & work on something all the way through. I usually end up having a few things going on at the same time, that way if I have 30 min here then I work on this, or 10 min there to spend on that, etc. So to put a "time" on something, geez. I guess I could say I'm still working on everything. I'd still be working on the time it took me to write the time it took me.

Stephen: he did a great job on the Patina and you did a beautiful job on the bracelet... THAT WOULD AWESOME IN SILVER -Peter

ou8nrtist2 In reply to dukecrescent [2008-01-27 17:20:02 +0000 UTC]

Except that silver bends so easily...
That's why I work with stainless steel so much,I can arc weld it and it's so tough.
A shape like this cuff would retain it's shape even under the worst treatment.

I've been heavily influenced by the findings in hoards. The undisturbed shots of Celtic treasures found in pits has been a marvelous inspiration for me.

It is a marbled look ,but it's not particularly heavy (compared to my other cuffs).
