The five PLATONIC SOLIDS are the first models one makes when beginning the study of Sacred Geometry.Those five shapes are the TETRAHEDRON.the CUBE,the OCTAHEDRON,the DODECAHEDRON,and the ICOSAHEDRON.There is an embedded knowledge revealed in the act of making the models.I call it "visceral learning".It is a type of direct understanding unmitigated by the intellect.Some call it cellular learning.The embedded knowledge to which I refer is the intuitive awareness of certain correspondencies,ratios and proportions of these five shapes and how they interact with one another.This piece is a sort of side exploration of the associated symmetries of the cube.It has 3 distinct dimensions ,height,width,and depth.Here's another attempt to illustrate XYZ orientation,this time surrounding a sphere which helps to conceptualize the idea.
Space navigation seems so similar to virtual 3D rotational programs,does it not ?
Welded stainless steel-outside rings are 9 inches in diameter.
The yellow globe is painted stainless steel and is 4 inches in diameter.

An instructional tool I made to try and convey how astronauts navigate in space.Pitch,yaw,and roll relate to the three dimensional planes illustrated by this shape.

And thanks for the word of the day, I never heard "yaw" before. But it seems obvious that the phrase "to pitch and roll" is incomplete without the third axis. I guess I thought the third one was just "veer".
How do you measure distance traveled in space? If you manage the spinning action, you'll have incorporated the 4th dimension (time).

I'm sure distance traveled in space is measured by laser shot or some similar device (radio pinging maybe) to the nearest static object.I'll bet it was infinitely harder to calculated for that moon mission in 1969...

I'm impressed that this is the result of less than a day's work (not to mention the piece itself is bloody brilliant). I saw a comment on here about navigation of the 3rd dimension, and it got me thinking. Perhaps if you had the tools to engrave units of measurement on here and maybe added some drilled holes and various other things, you could make it look like it was a functional piece of navigation equipment from a bygone era. I did a similar piece on my profile entitled "Locus Reperio." Not actually functional, but it looks like it could be. It's the whole concept of creating a sliver of doubt or belief in the viewers mind, them extrapolate it to achieve an enormous impact. I like envisioning the different instruments that might have resulted from an altered time line where the continents drifted differently.

I saw your piece Locus Reperio,and I'm attracted to the relatively new genre of Steam Punk.
But it is my considered opinion that it fails precisely BECAUSE they are fantasy instruments.
We currently have futuristic technologies at ready hand to make FUNCTIONAL instruments that are indeed beautiful and intriguing as well.

I've made it so the sphere in the middle is loose and can rotate,but now I'm seeing it as spinning slowly,so I'm trying to figure out how I can put a tiny little slow electric motor in there somehow.
As mentioed in another comment ,I'm trying to shop it as a logo for a new high tech eco company...We'll see if they bite.

But what if the globe on the inside of the piece was photoshopped to be the planet Earth,and it rotated with a simple animation treatment.

On earth, the only non arbitrary great circle is the equator. The other great circles on the globe (the longitude lines) are merely human convention.
This isn't true of the tide locked moons. For example our moon has a near earth point and a far earth point in addition to its north and south poles. In addition to the equator, there is a non-arbitrary great circle separating near side from far side.
There is another non arbitrary great circle defined by 4 points: lunar north and south pole and the near and far points.
So a globe of the moon should have 3 great circles. Just like your 3 bands around a sphere.

I see the dangers of cell phone use while driving daily.

i think its just politicians who are afraid to make unpopular law's no mater how trivial and tiny they actually are. Same question could be asked about seat belts - why goverment makes me use that "uncomfortable" thing. I dont see it as addiction to tech but more like general stupidity and carelessness. On the other hand i cant deny that people tend to rely to much on technology in this era.
