Haha! That youtube video where this guy was going to give he tutorial on how to make a fireplace and then burnt his giant wooden house down was the reason why I decided I must have minecraft XD!
That's actually not my house, just the most decorated in our group castle and the guy wanted to see how my texture pack was coming along. The fireplace IS surrounded by obsidian so... idk, if it does start on fire, I will surely post a screenshot XD! I kind of doubt it though because the whole structure is surrounded by water

Seen that one, actually. I kinda saw it coming, but I've had a few laughs. xD
Well, usually, if you can distance the fire enough, then it doesn't matter what surrounds it (as long as it's not something combustible).

oh lol, so I was playing last night with the guy who built it and my husband and hubs goes: "OMG Glirk, your place! There's fire in it!!1" So I was like... WAIT! I need to get a screenshot! he was like, "YEAH it's in a 1 by 3 area! Better Hurry." And the guy who built it was sort of freaking out, I get there.. Hub's all: "yeah, the fireplace has a fire in it." Gah! Jerk. He must have seen your comment

Ha ha ha ha. If I make a fireplace, I usually make it a 3x3 box, and then make an opening at the front (2x1, same as a door). Then I surround the cube with a non-combustible floor (so now the area is 4x4), and then make a tube at the top of the box to make it look like a fireplace. Of course, I put most of it behind the actual wall of the house, so all you see if the front of the fireplace, to make it look realistic.
Kinda hard to explain, but I will make it and show you a screenshot some time.

Whoot, I look forward to it. I love seeing how creative ppl can get in Minecraft. On the opposite wall of the fireplace is a 'bar' with bar stools, it's fence posts with a half block on them.. it looks wicked and I'm all "Gah, why didn't I think of that?"

Yup. Waiting for Notch to release a real fireplace as an item.

Sounds cool!
Not sure what use it would have except a lot of light though?

Maybe if he releases a system where a player can get cold, then it can be used for heat?
It could potentially be used for heating food up, too. I guess. Sort of. In a way. Or it could be used for pretty, kinda like pictures.

The survival aspect can easily be overdone
Like a furnace... but also has like more light then a torch,

There are safety's put in place... besides what fun would it be if everything was foolproof.
