Read up on the legend of the Countess Elizabet/h Bathory aka the Blood Countess.....the legend (short version) that I heard was she thought she could keep herself young by bathing in the blood of virgin girls. She didn't get in trouble until she had killed a virgin of noble birth. She was tried and convicted of heresy, witchcraft and other sundry crimes and sentenced to be locked away from public eye in a room surrounded by crosses. She was kept in the room until she died.
