A portrait of the indomitable Mr Carson from Downton Abbey. He's played by Jim Carter, who can express more with a movement of one of his owlish eyebrows than most actors can do in a whole performance.I'm trying to refine my inking technique here...or actually, I'm trying to develop an inking technique. I used an actual drawing pen (a Prismacolor .05 something-or-other), rather than my usual ballpoint. I was going to spice it up with some color or highlights, but I just decided to let the inked lines stand on their own.
I used a couple of different images of Mr Carson, so there's no single reference picture. I'm not totally satisfied with the likeness, but he has a wonderful face, and it provided a good way to work on some hatching techniques. Comments and criticism are always welcome. Thanks for looking.

I really like the STRONG lines! Sometimes I prefer messy lines or delicate lines, but this image seems to call for clean, bold lines, so it works really well. I love the hatching. And the anatomy looks pretty darn excellent to me. Also the title is very cute

Ah, thank you for recognizing what I was after! Lines like this are much more challenging for me...they are much less forgiving, but I really like the effect when they come out right.

Looks like the guy who comes up when I google it. I'm not able to distinguish the difference between your pro pen and your ballpoint, but your line work seems pretty brilliant to me as usual.

Thanks, Alex. It's easier to sketch with a ballpoint. It's sort of a dry tip and you can draw really lightly and correct as you go along. This other pen pretty much just lays down the line, and you have to get it right the first time. But if you do, you get a nicer line...I think, anyway.

I haven't seen much of Downton Abbey, but as far as I can tell, this is a very accurate portrait.
Do you ever take requests to draw people if we provide a good reference?

I never have, but I suppose I could try. I actually don't think I'm that good at capturing the "essence" of someone, but I'm working on it. Go ahead and send me something if you want. Glad to see you back online

I think you do a great job of capturing the essence. I can always tell who the person is, and if I know of them beforehand, I usually recognize them before I read the title. They're really amazing.

Oh I guess I can take a shot at Russell Crowe. I don't think I'll use the pic you sent (he looks a little too airbrushed...I like more imperfections in the face...it's why I like drawing old people), but I can do something from Les Miz. People complained about his singing in that, but I thought he was pretty good. So anyway, I'm not going to promise a time frame (I have to wrap up that damn writing contest!), but I'll put it in my brain file of Things I Want to Draw.
