Description

After seeing how well my Frieza sequence  turned out, I decided I should draw Cell’s transformation as well some day. Deciding this was a good time, I spent three days drawing and preparing this blog. I wanted to submit this into the 19th installment of the “Art Show Weekly”, so I knew this had to be submitted before the 22nd of May in order to be applicable.

Since the theme was anything Dragon Ball Z related, it gave me a lot of options. Ultimately, I chose Cell because he fit the theme and I really believed it was time for me to give him his own sequence.

After watching many anime and seeing many antagonists, I have to say that for me, the best villain is none other than this Ultimate Lifeform. Intimidating yet captivating, Cell has everything one needs to be a great villain and then takes it to another level with his charisma and unique character-appeal. Each of his forms were special and interesting in their respective ways: Imperfect Cell was a shrewd and determined horror-esque creature that could strike terror and send chills down your spine whenever he arrived to the scene; Semi-Perfect Cell was a big and intimidating brawler who crushed everything in his path as he hunted down Android 18, displaying an intelligent and manipulative nature when he tried to lure his prey in or when confronted by Vegeta; and of course there was the sensational Perfect Cell who completed his goals with a brilliant bravado. Now, none of this is to say that I rooted for him at any point, in fact I like a villain that provides a captive confrontation and obstacle for the protagonists-which Cell did quite perfectly. To top it off, he exited as grand as he entered, going out with a memorable death and defeat that no other Dragon Ball villain has managed (Frieza was unceremoniously killed by Trunks, Buu was an odd case since he both died and reformed, and both Piccolo and Vegeta reformed into some of the best heroes in the series).

For these reasons above, I believe Cell is one of the best anime villains and I greatly enjoyed being able to draw an evolution-style sequence that matched his character and science-fiction theme.
This has to be one of my favorites now, I really like how this came out and am happy that all of those hours of hard work really paid off. An additional plus point is that now my Frieza and Cell sequences have formed a small set. Thank you for reading, if you have any thoughts or feelings about my art, feel free to leave a comment below.
