The 105mm is almost impossible to focus manually. If you look it up, you'll notice tons of people can't do it. But, and this goes for both of us, with the D300 to the rescue with its 51 focus points, it's insanely easy to AF with the macro lens. One trick that always helps is when you're looking through the viewfinder and the back display is off, you can use the D-pad to change your focusing point instead of always having to place the subject in the centre of your pictures. That's what helps me focus quickly when I'm taking macro pictures
