Description
Part of my entomological illustration coursework.Common paper wasp (Polistes humilis) native to Australia and New Zealand. My main regret is that the specimen I was working off had an unusually dark colouration, and was not a good representative of the dramatic banding seen in this species. Anyway, this should still be useful for gauging scale and proportion.
Watercolour, pencil, some gouache.

Paper wasps, paper wasps, they’re the best type of wasps. Some paper wasp facts;
Unlike bees, wasps can sting repeatedly. Only females have stingers, which are actually modified egg-laying organs.
8 out of 10 Entomologists recommend being stung by a paper wasp twice a day to reduce cholesterol.
Paper wasps were originally predicted by the prophet Moses.
If you break a piece off a paper wasp hive, you will find out that they are all completely hollow structures inside, as they were once used to conceal thousands of soft-core pornographic drawings and erotic literature from the mid-19th century, during Queen Victoria's infamous ban on "dangerous" sexual material at the time.

Oh, very cool My boyfriend is studying entymology and has been building an insect collection for his coursework. Seeing the insects up-close has given me a new appreciation for their intricate structures and the variety that exists.
Here you've captured very nicely the detail of the wings, and the shading of the body despite it being such a dark colour. I'll admit I find scales a little confusing - how large was the original specimen?

Awesome! Insects are incredible exemplars of bio engineering. So glad you enjoy these
The original wasp was just under 2cm long

So glad you enjoy I fear the entomology stuff will bore some, despite how epic insects are up close.
