Description
Hilariously “what is an okapi a cross between?” is the top frequently asked question that Google suggests for this animal. Although they might appear halfway between a giraffe and a zebra, okapis quite happily belong to their own genus, thank you very much.Prints & gifts available at my Redbubble store.
Original drawing has been sold.
Media: Polychromos pencils on toned paper, plus a little white gouache to make the markings pop.

Thank you so much! Yes I also noticed it's rare to see them running.

Eee this turned out gorgeous! I love okapis. Growing up I had a toy okapi I loved, but I had never heard how to say it, I just read it as "oh-kah-pie" and it wasn't until I was in my late teens that I learned how to say it correctly. To this day if someone brings up an okapi my siblings will start yelling at me about how I ruined them and taught them the wrong pronunciation.

Haha! I'm not even sure if I'm saying it correctly now
I was trying to describe the okapi to my father recently (kind of a lost cause, he's no biology buff), all he absorbed was "oh-ka-what??" But he could accept calling it "zebra giraffe", whatever works!

I heard a zookeeper call them "oh-kah-pee" so I think that's right? I may have to settle for zebra giraffe at this rate. They are such a strange but beautiful animal.

They have the coolest stripey butts.
Once again, your ability to refine muscle structure is fabulous! That neck, especially. And the shapes to the legs are wonderful!

Thank you! I think I improvised some of the anatomy But in my defense I couldn't find any clear reference images of running okapis, apparently they don't gallop very often.
