There is a later comment on the towed launcher.
A towed unit provided independence from the sub design and segregated the hazards, but created an entirely new range of design problems.
(Polmar) "Cold War Submarines".
The only moving V2 launcher was the USS Midway in 1947.
V2 off a carrier deck, that is worth the price of admission.
The US considered converting some battleships and cruisers as V2 launchers, but navy missile work took a turn toward Loon (a V1 derivative) and Regulus cruise missiles.
At least ships have some infrastructure for support.Β Redstone and Corporal had relatively short ranges but deployed with 15 vehicles and 250 crew, including wonderful field manageable tankage for LOx, RFNA, anhydrous H2O2 and hydrazine.Β Stuff that requires special attention even in lab conditions.
The limitation of most of the early missiles was guidance, V1 and V2 were area weapons.Β Half of the German launched V1s didn't even hit the target cities.Β Pretty much all of the wartime precision weapons required escort guidance through TV.Β But, nuclear changed the accuracy requirement.
There is a free book download on Amazon 25 Jan 2019,Β Tripping Over Engineering: Going Nuclear.Β If anyone is interested.Β It hits the edges of this discussion.

That's kind of a waste actually. V-2 was more of a gimmick then an effective weapon, V-1 would be much better option for this sub. The problem is that germans had no need of such combination. Japanese on the other hand... well, let's just say that if they had outfitted I-400 with as many Ohka's they could fit in hangar and a catapult, it might have been usefull and quite effective. Would have. Had it been used in any numbers higher then 6 back in Midway, but that'd be quite a time(and probability) anomaly then
And before you say it, Ohka was effective too, just too late. It was doomed because it was a desperation measure and those never work.
Ejecting seat and drop off warhead are still an option if it sounds a bit too harsh. Though the fate of a captured pilot would still probably be the same as of snipers, flamethower troops and saboteurs

It looks like the submarine is the type XXI. The dorsal view is an unusual one, and very welcome. It's a great "what if" idea. I think they intended to use a towed canister for the V-2 rocket to be launched from off-shore of the USA.

Great depiction of a fascinating concept. Thank goodness it never became a reality.

nice to meet someone who delves into the "WW2 what if" scenarios like me.

If i remember right there were some projects to try and launch v-2 and v-1 missiles from ships and submarines..the first missile armed subs carried what was basically an advanced v-1 cruise missile from the surface.

Yeah, we even tried to lunch V-2Β΄s from solid ground without a damn high rate of real dirty accidents
But can you say more about? I never heart of something like that, airplane-luchers from submarines(japan) yes - but V-2?

Hmm, interesting. Never heard about something, but Hitler was a great fan of the word "Superweapon". ItΒ΄s a bit like american military and laserweapons or such....
Thanks for the link

Only they towed the launchers with a U-boat they didn't launch them from the U-boat itself

Excellent, and very probable, given the time to develop.
