I like everything about this work, but I'm am quite addicted to understanding of how people do the "focus" effect.
If you have a tip, I'd love to here it.

It's quite a simple solution really if your using Photoshop.

For speed you can select the area you want to blur using the lasso tool (shortcut (L)) then copy and paste the selection, Then gaussain blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussain Blur). The closer the object is the more blur you should apply.

If you dont like using filters (which a lot of illustrators dont) then you can paint the object normally (in focus) and using the smudge tool with a large feathered brush to smudge the area.
be careful when doing it though you only need to move the brush back and forward a few millimetres to achieve the effect.

I tend to use the smudge approach as the blur gets less as you travel down the arm.
