Description One of the ideas I came by for Dubhghall's creature contest --> [link]
and yes, you could have guessed it would be a dragon ... but not just any dragon, more like the grandfather of all dragons!

I really hope I get to do some of my other ideas... I have all sorts, from spider-dragons to jellyfish belly-dancers....

sketched really quick, coloured in Photoshop with a tablet... I tried some strange colour blending, hope it turned out right ....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Creature description:
Introduction:
The “Fog summoners” (or “Living hills”) are mystical creatures more than anything else. A lot of cultures identify them as forest spirits, some even as Gea’s messengers. The more “biological” descriptions describe them as enormous dragon-like creatures that live deep in the middle of old forests, preferably somewhere near a river, or between mountains.
Although there are a lot of files about them, most of them if not all are just speculations or myths (that’s why most of the data that follows is either supposed or based on new research). Nobody really studied these creatures, and only a few saw them in their habitats. Nevertheless, from the latest data we have, we know that only a few specimens remain, all of them quite old, and from those none are female or younger than 100yrs.
Morphology:
It is said that it is easier to move a rocky mountain than a “fog summoner”, which isn’t far from the truth. These creatures are enormous, sometimes compared to small hills (as they often mimicry themselves in such hills).
Their skin is extremely hard, covered in scales and some fur-feather-like structures the color of corroded olive and dry earth, so they easily blend into the background (there are some theories that part of the green on their fur are actually colonies of cyanobacteria). Older specimens have a lot of scars covering their bodies, and the skin became so thin and scale-less on some parts that the light muscles, bones and veins can be seen through them. You can tell how old a specimen is by the length of its horns. They have 3 long talons for their front arms, and raptor-like feet. Their musculature is extremely strong, especially chest and feet muscles, even though they prefer to move slowly and lazily. Nothing is known about their feeding habits.
Males are generally bigger than females, but they have smaller wings, and thus can’t use them for flight. Cubs can be up to 10m big. These creatures prefer solitary and calm life away from others of their kind and from people.
History & culture:
These creatures are extremely intelligent, high above the smartest humans. In some cultures there are stories that the first humans were taught to read and write from them.
They got the name “Fog summoners” because most of the supposed spottings were registered in very foggy landscapes. New researches found that they’re indeed responsible for the forming of a special fog, since they often like to smoke their pipes, the size of medium oak trees, which create a lot of smoke and steam.
Some also think that these creatures often have special alchemy laboratories in deep mountain caves, where they can conduct their experiments in peace, and without the fear of being discovered by humans, but this is only a theory.
Although extremely calm and docile, the cubs and smaller females were often treated as “Satan’s warriors”, which led to their chase and killing (an interesting fact is that the slaughterers were honored as heroes and mighty knights). It is probably this that led to the disappearance of females and the slow decay of the surviving males.
thanks!
haha, I made them mostly to prove that green dragons can still be something new and unique, you just have to be careful of the design and background story...
and now I love the "fog summoners" to bits! still doodle them from time to time...
Oh, sorry When you used plural I didn't think of many this kind of dragons (I thought it's some kind of book or group title).
I would read that book (as much as I can tell from description it should be interesting) It's pretty hard to find good book involving dragons, or at least I usually don't succeed in that
agreed. I own only 2 books that are about dragons, one is a bunch of stories and legends from all over the world and the other is the first Dragonology book. but still, I want one that has hundreds of pages and has every single detail inside D:
actually it is "Dragons: A natural history" by Karl Shuker ([link] ) it's interesting because it is mostly just a collection of legends divided by dragon type (sky dragons, neo-dragons, serpent dragons and so on)
Are there any myths from Baltic region ? I think it's pretty strange that many various kind of dragons are so popular in cultures all around the world, yet it is said it never existed
p-korle In reply to zuvelioke [2010-10-06 10:15:39 +0000 UTC]
yeah, it is fascinating. well, when you think about it people believed in their existence up to the 19th century, so it isn't really strange.
hm, I don't have the book here, and I don't remember if there were some Baltic dragon myths. I'll check it out when I go home...
Well, come on! He does look more mossy than hilly. Like he's emerged from a thick bed of MUSH. Oh yes.
Anyway, lovely colouring! Great ideas about the background history, biology, etc. Funkadelic.
yes, you are right about the mush (if by that you mean moss)
I was inspired by mossy old trees also... and swamps.... old swamps with lots of weird vegetation.....
No, not moss. Mush. Mush, I tell you. Grugha...
Well, I s'pose you're the artist, if it is moss...I was thinking. Hellluva moss growth if he's the size of a goddamn hill!
It looks kinda oriental if you get my meaning.
Well, yeah, grooooovy, anyway.
lazarusmumble In reply to p-korle [2007-04-10 20:06:14 +0000 UTC]
Well, mold is a difficult thing...mebbe it's actually hair, just mold grows in it as a kinda camouflage, or because it can't wash it out. Like a sloth.
