most likely (in my opinion) his dispassionate way of referring to her grandchildren caused her to become defensive. so she took his comment to be dehumanizing and, therefore, offensive. but Glossarick has no preconceptions about species, he is simply stating the facts.
this would be similar to someone using the term "retarded", in its purely scientific meaning it has no relation to an individuals value but common usage has led to it being an insult.
a good example would be Rick and Morty.
