Is this movie somehow connected to the Alien franchise?

Prequel.

It's not a prequel, according to Ridley Scott.

These set pictures suggest otherwise...

I am a member of AvPGalaxy, I've seen the set photos.

I've also looked at interviews with Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender as well, both have said it's not a prequel, it's a separate thing but it's still connected to Alien. In other words, it's a side story, not a prequel.

Personally, the buzz surrounding Prometheus seems to tick most of the boxes to make it a prequel. After all, isn't a prequel merely just a continuation of an established setting/scenario (not necessarily using the same characters), but set in an earlier timeframe to the original?

The story is said to focus on the crashed derelict and Space Jockey, and maybe even explain how both came to become stranded on Acheron. If that's not a prequel to Alien, then what is?

Scott is even on record as saying:

"It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle β€” there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair."

The movie originally started as a prequel. But as soon as Damon Lindelof got a hold of the Alien Harvest script written by Jon Spaits, he re-wrote it and then it evolved into something else. As of January 2011, Ridley Scott officially announced that the movie was no longer an Alien Prequel but something original. We didn't hear anything else until the working title-- Prometheus.

The Cast was later on announced, and Ridley Scott interviews were given and he said that while it's no longer a prequel, it's still connected to the Alien universe by certain aspects. What elements, well there are rumors of the Space Jockey being involved. More cast interviews were given and in a recent article with Fassbender does state, explicitly so:

"Hmm shall I cause controversy? Um, no. The thing is, it’s not a prequel. It definitely is separate. It is a separate story, but there are threads that connect the stories. "

Interesting how the film is described as being 'definitely seperate' and yet still 'connected' to Alien.

I guess, we'll finally know for sure when Prometheus hits theatres next year.

Well think of it like this..

Prometheus is to the Alien Saga as is Soldier is to Blade Runner.

Both are set in the same universe, just are side-stories or simple stand alone films.

I also wouldn't rely on Film News sites like AICN, IMDB, JoBlo, etc, etc.. Take the news directly from the source, the Director, the Producer, and the Cast.

Of course, that's my personal way of going about things. And Prometheus does sound promising, much more promising than the disappointment which was PREDATORS.
