Description
----
Maeffles are a CLOSED species, meaning you cannot make one without permission.
They live as rodents on Craven! A place were the species Astrolytes live!
Go check them out, they are a semi-open evolving species!
Maeffles
(May-fulls)
Fluffies
(Fluff-ies)
Maeffles are small rodent like creatures. They have fluffy bodies and a marble tail, their front feet are paws with 3 toes and their back legs are claws. They normally have permanently closed eyes and lack ears, but have a very sensitive nose and taste. It is said they sometimes check their surroundings by 'smelling' the air, like a snake. They lack a 'tail', instead having a marble in-cased in two strange flaps to keep it in place.
They live on a planet called 'Craven' with a much larger species called 'Astrolytes'. They classify Maeffles as rodents and react the same was as most humans do to rats, towards them.
Maeffles are very small creatures, and can easily be held in the palm of your hand without problem. Humanoid Astrolytes tend to have to same sized hooves as us humans, and they can sit there without problem.
Males and females don't really have anything that can really tell the difference between the two, but there are small ones. Males are much larger the females and have an extra small claw on their back feet.
Maeffles live in rather large groups called 'Pods'. The groups normally are all from the same bloodline, but sometimes a stray Maeffle can find a way into a different family pod. If they are, they are mostly treated as outcasts, but soon enough they are treated as normal family if they have gained the alpha Maeffle's trust. The Alpha Maeffle is the leader of the Pod, and gathers food for most of the Pod.
They are omnivores and can eat anything from grass to a cooked chicken! But they much prefer meat. Instead of chewing, Maeffles tend to swallow their food whole.
Maeffles have two spiked parts on their mouth, right at the front of the muzzle. These are used to break and crush any food they are unable to swallow. It may seem like they lack teeth, but they don't. Their teeth seem to 'fold' back into their mouth, exactly like a snake's does. They do in fact have venom, males tend to have a more powerful venom then females. Though, due to how small they are, their venom is not dangerous to humans if they bite. But it could potentially be harmful if bitten near ant vital organs or on the face.
Stray Maeffles are normally the ones who the Alpha kicks out of the Pod. This could be either because they attacked the Alpha, any other Pod mates, they refuse to follow the Alpha's rule, or no longer have a Marble. They are more at risk of death from starvation or thirst, but are less likely to be killed by predators. Since they are alone, they can hide in smaller areas and not be burdened by Pod mates. Finding food is difficult for them, as well as finding a safe place to rest. If a Stay Maefulle is lucky enough, a Pod will accept them to join them, but they must gain the trust of the Alpha to officially be apart of the Pod.
A Maeffles Marble is a very important part of them, especially when breeding. The Maeffle with the most colourful or pretty marble is most likely to be chosen by a female, rather then one with a less colourful marble. If a Maeffle breaks their marble, any female will refuse to breed with them. Maeffles are born with a small clear marble that slowly gets its pattern and colours as they grow older. A Maeffle without a Marble will also be kicked out of their Pod and will no longer be able to join a new one. They are also quite a prized thing, due to how pretty they are able to get. This also increases their chances if being attacked by an Astrolyte to keep their marble.
Fluffies are what the Maeffles children are called! They are born in litters, and are extremely fragile. They are very noisy critters, and will cry out if cold, hungry, scared, etc. They make a squeaking noise that gets louder the longer it continues, alerting any nearby predators of their location. Fluffies are not normally born with fur, and have a very small marble tail. Their fangs are small and can be slightly seen inside their mouths when they are open, since they are still children they have not yet developed any venom. They are very needy and cannot leave their mothers side. If you see one, it is highly suggested that you DON'T touch it, a slight poke can disturb their vital organs and bend their bones. That is how fragile they are.
Maeffles don't lay eggs, but instead have litters of around 1-6 Flufflies. a Flufflie is a baby Maeffle, and extremely fragile critters. When Fluffies are born, Pods are unable to relocate until they grow up, this often leads to them being found and killed, especially if their current den is inside of a house. Fluffies tend to be rather noisy, which can lead a predator right towards them. If they really must relocate, the pod will attempt to take all the Fluffies with them. But either they get left behind, die while they are moving, or have a serious mutation/disability. Their bodies are extremely soft and are easily damaged, too violent movement, like trying to escape a predator, can damage their internal organs or limbs, causing them to die.
A mother Maeffle who has lost all of her litter normally go into a deep state of mourning. Even though the rest of the pod will be upset about the mass loss, they will get over it quicker then the mother. Sometimes you may see a female Maeffle trying to bring her children back to life, or looking after them as if they had never died. Due to this, Pods will normally abandon the mother Maeffle since they cannot stay in one place. The mother will either die from a predator, starvation, thirst, or from diseases she has caught from the corpses.
Maeffles do not mate with their Pod mates, unless it is absolutely nessasary. Instead either during the breeding season or sometimes when they come into contact with a neutral Pod, they will mate that way. The mother will take the Fluffies, and the male can just forget about them.
