Reposted with permission, this is one of three b/w illustrations to appear in NOD 9. The art description asked for a female sohei wearing a robe with dragon patterns. I felt this ruled out a lot of historical outfits, so I tried to give her cues - the kerchief, oversized rosary, and bare feet with geta - which still read as monastic.Related content
