the writers, when drawing the whole mutation scene, it must have been a bitch drawing even one frame

Indeed buddy, and when you saw this in junior high did it left an impression on you as well? i remembered 17 years ago when i was 14 after hearing good things about it i rented it and it left an impression on me as it was nothing i've ever seen before. I bought the VHS right away at one of my city's malls, bought a few t-shirts, bought some back issues of the manga from Epic Marvel at some of my local comic stores plus at conventions, wallscroll i had hanging in my room for years, CD soundtrack and even got the criterion laserdisc for christmas. Then in 2001 i bought the 2-disc DVD and the action figures as i loved it that much for it was one of my obsessions.
Did you think of Leonardo the turtle when you heard Keneda's voice in the original dub?

From what I've learned Akira was released theatrically in Japan in 1988. And then it came to the US in 1989. But I didn't see this movie until 1996 when I was 13. And yes; this movie sure has left an impression on me with its uniqueness and originality. It wasn't until about 10 years after I discovered it when I purchased by own copy of the DVD edition. Indeed, this movie is unlike anything I've ever seen before, and has definitely withstood the test of time. In fact, Akira seems to be way ahead of its time in many aspects. And it has influenced me in so many special ways. In fact, Akira was the film that re-introduced me to anime and manga, and its influence is still felt to this day.
Hah! I know! I remember that Kaneda was voiced by Cam Clarke in the Streamline dub! And yes, he did sound like Leonardo from the original TMNT cartoon! In the Pioneer dub, he was voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, same person who did the voices of Vash the Stampede, Ichigo, Nero, and countless other fictional characters. He has a very reconizable voice.

Whenever I've done anything close to getting colors like this, it's after I've done some bright comic booky type coloring and then desaturated everything. How do you train your mind to see colors like this from reality without having to go the extra route? That flesh tone is crazy, but if I copied it directly, my mind wouldn't see it as flesh when I started to paint. Could you give me some incite as to how to train my mind to be able to see that initially?

Dude.. it took me like 3 hours to come up with this palette haha. I colored it several times until I came up with this.
Coloring something is always like some sort of experiment. I always end up changing something, or completely changing everything drastically until I'm happy with it. The best advice I can give you is to always try something different once you're done with it. I'm constantly changing and tweaking things around until you find something that you're satisfied with. It takes some patience but it pays off at the end. Try using some gradient maps and unsaturating the entire piece, then go back and change some hues and you'll see how it helps. I'll try making some sort of tutorial that explains my coloring technique/thought process sometime in the near future.

oh yea, I definitely hear you on going back into the piece once it's done. I remember taking a class years ago on comic coloring and the teacher told us a cool technique of rendering the whole piece, and then adding a color over the top of everything, and mucking with the opacity and layer blending options and it does wonders for different layers I use now!

All is perfect except for the cape, it should have been torn and ripped on the end part. But I love how you emphasized the red. Composition is awesome too. Instant fave.
