OUT IN THE HEARTLAND is a story I've been cooking in my head for some time now, from me observing kids in my own high school in Arizona. I should definantly write it, but I wouldn't know how to write a story with 20 high school students.

ITS LIKE DEGRASSI, except in a conservative American Texas atmosphere.

THE ORIGINAL IDEA

NOTES:

1) They're all aged 15-17 in their junior year of high school.
2) The setting is Saint Jefferson High School, Dallas, TX.
3) Forgive me, the anatomy and shading aren't very good.

Alex Galveston – His insecurities run deep since a child but dose a wonderful job of covering it all up by being overly sarcastic and shallow to all the “ugly” people. He’s into Andy Warhol, The Beatles, and the 1960’s in general. He usually wears old vintage jeans and faded clothes from pawnshops. He's usually seen sleeping in class, but contrary to popular thought, Alex is drug free. Since Junior High Alex has been obsessed with Troy, one of the jocks. He thinks Troy is trapped in a perfect world, despite the jock status and girlfriend, he seems unsatisfied. Friendship quickly turns into a secret passionate relationship, but puts him in the middle of a complicated love triangle, as Troy is still a womanizer.

Diana Delbaugh – In a nutshell Diana is very friendly, very attractive, and everyone seems likes her, the ones that don’t are just jealous of her clean record. She’s best friends with Alex and even dated him before he knew he was gay. She’s an only child of her rich parents and has like a thousand cousins. She dresses differently everyday usually different from the rest and wears scene-inspired makeup but isn’t one of them. She’s oblivious to the fact that Austin is completely obsessed over her, but she assumes that all jocks only want sex.

Travis Addison – Travis is the one everyone fantasizes about as he’s got the All-American looks and smile. Hes the quarterback for the football team and can be considered the "leader" of the jocks. He’s overly pressured to be all he can from his father and two older brothers to a point of ridiculousness. When nobody’s looking, Travis is a total wreck; he never gets recognition when needed; so when nobody’s looking he's doing drugs, taking pills, or even cutting himself, yeah. Travis has an on and off relationship with Maria, the only one who keeps him from going off the radar.

Maria Marino - Maria is half Italian and half Irish and was raised in the poorer sections of El Paso, Texas. Her life was pretty dramatic as a child with major family & gang issues but now it seems that chapter of her life is over. People usually think she comes off fake, but they don’t know the whole story and she could really care less. She dates Travis on and off due to their unlikely chemistry but dysfunctional relationship but in the end he’s the only one she will fall for that hard.

Troy Winters – So Troy’s always had a good life, growing up in a conservative Christian family. He’s on the football team, he’s extremely attractive, and has a hot cheerleading girlfriend. He spends most of his time working out, hanging with Sherry & Mary, or dating his girlfriend Stephanie. There’s just one issue, since high school rolled around he has noticed his attraction to Alex, a guy. It's become apparent he's bisexual and develops this fascination over Alex, he thinks hes interesting. He befriends him and they form a secret relationship but eventually Alex gets sick of being #2 place to Stephanie and is even outed to the school, that’s where things get a bit dramatic.

Mary Carfield – Mary was raised in Provo, Utah, moved to the heartland in 3rd grade where she met her best friend ever since, Sherry. The thing about Mary is she’s nearly perfect, her life couldn’t be flawed, her family is just perfect, perfectly Mormon. She’s rather conservative and a bit homophobic every now and then, and can be outspoken in a content and calm way. She’s actually good friends with Alex but she is unaware with his political views and being gay, that is until he’s outed.

Sherry Hannigan – Sherry can be considered a closeseted whore, but hey with a body like that, who wouldn’t? Sherry goes to church with the family and all, but she really doesn’t believe it all, she keeps the church girl image to make people think that she’s not bad. She has a reputation of being a total party animal, after a few drinks she’s up for anything. She’s currently single but has dated several guys including Troy who’s now her closest male friend, she is the first to suspect Troy's sexuality. Her best friend is Mary, since 3rd grade, but it's becoming apparent that Mary is more of a nagging mother than best friend to Sherry.

Jasmine Wells – So Jasmine was raised in Amarillo, Texas, moved to Dallas after her mother abandoned her and her father. Since then her father has fallen apart to drugs and drinking excessively. As a result she has been beaten several times as a child, she made herself forget the other bad memories including a failed suicide attempt at 13. Nobody knows any of this, she’s never trusted anyone that much. On the outside she’s very nice and usually hangs around church and her church friends, anything away from her home. She’s got very low self-esteem; she thinks she’s huge and is waiting for the perfect boy she can open up to.

Clyde Alexandrov – Clyde looks intimidating and all, he rides his motorcycle around, has several piercings, and rumored, a tattoo already. From a Russian descent, he’s pretty athletic, on the football team, but he’s extremely competitive and rough leading him to get kicked off of the team both in freshmen and sophomore year. Underneath it all Clyde is just a bit different than the rest, he apparently is very interesting and soft, he is after all dating Bonnie.

Bonnie Zimmermann – Now Bonnie is total nice girl, she isn’t a church girl but she dose volunteer at the church a lot on her free time. When she’s not volunteering she’s involved in student council activities or volleyball, she loves volleyball. She’s been dating Clyde for about a year now and it seems everyone envies their mysterious relationship, the two seem to be complete polar opposites, but it somehow all works out in the end.
