Description White and grey Prismacolors, on black A4 paper from reference.

Did some work with a blender pen to smooth out the shading on the skin here. I don't enjoy it, but it definitely made this one less scratchy that my white-on-blacks usually are.

I understand your challenge. Have you explored the ability of a kneaded eraser to remove an imperceptible amount of the white pencil. Don't rub it, just press the eraser against the area you want to darken. It will lift just a little bit.

thanks for the tip! that's my next step i think, depending on how far i want to push the medium.
it would definitely get better results... for me it's balancing the fun with the "fiddling" if you know what i mean.

No problem! I stumbled across this when I had to completely erase a mistake I had made. It took about 20 minutes to "press and remove" all the white pencil, to get to the black paper.

I think you will like the subtle gradations you can achieve.
