Description EDIT: Old version can be found here:

Sadly, I can't go into this too deeply, don't want to spoil anything. Tamiko is my main character from my webcomic. If I were to print the first part of the comic, I would want this to be the cover art of the book. I'd extend the top for the title, but that was the main idea for this piece. I'm also trying to get more comfortable painting without line art. I got inspired by and her recent one layer pieces. I'm proud to say everything is on one layer (minus url and junk) but I did test on other layers still so that I didn't have to CRTL+Z everything. I'm really proud of myself and the growth I got from this. It actually made me want to try real oil painting again, which I am not good at whatsoever. xD

Any suggestions/critiques are welcome too. I want to keep improving any way I can and I love this piece, so any way I can make it better, please let me know!

On a side note, I've been incredibly addicted to this song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8umjnT… The feels are strong.

I dig this so much, I keep going back to look at it The contrast between her warmth and the cold of the background is stunning too btw.. But the main thing I noticed is how stylistic this looks, I really like the fact that you didnt smooth everything out, and kept this pape-ish texture to it as well, I can almost see the layers in which you put it on (as in painting, not actual layers in the program). If you were to paint more analog, why not acrylic? I know you probably know, but its cheap, you can paint over and over and it dries super quick.. Maybe its better to use for experimenting and learning, is what I'm saying^^ But great job on this, I'm happy you gave it a try! It looks extremely neat and there's no areas that irritate me (maaaybe just the eye could seem rounder? Helps to shade off the edges a little more than you have, so it looks like a round ball), no areas I can tell you've worked a long time at. Also you put in exactly what is needed and nothing more, especially in her face. Just.. very good job

Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear that, I originally had the background warmer and I just wasn't liking it.

I actually LOVE acrylic and would say I'm fairly decent with it. It's oils however I have never, ever figured out. But I get how it is suppose to work, so I used that idea with this. (The brushes I used mixes with the current colors I have on a layer if that makes sense.) I had bad experiences in school as well with oil, it was really bad luck. First we had a teacher who was misinformed and thought we had 4 classes on oil already, so she didn't teach us much at all. Then our classes got cut from 16 to 8 weeks with the same amount of work, so I rushed every painting to get it done for a grade. xD But I agree, acrylic is amazing and cheap, very user friendly.

Yeah something with the eye bothers me too, maybe it is the roundness. I couldn't figure it out myself. But thanks again! I'm thinking of doing another one with Ky to practice painting a male face instead this time. Hopefully, with similar results.

Ahh, I see, thats too bad:/ Oils are really challenging and in my opinion, not always on our side Meaning it makes painting more of a challenge than maybe it should be.. Also takes a lot of time! But I totally admire people that can do it, I see the appeal

I hope so too! It would be very cool with them both in the style, their colors are sort of opposite too, they'd look cool beside each other: )

I agree. They're also crazy expensive which turns me off to it. I'm very impressed by people who can do it, it's definitely a talent xD

I like that idea, I might make his more dark and not as bright to contrast them a bit.

I love the coloring here, it is delicious!

I decided to critique this, but it's easier for me to show than tell, so I did a quick paintover here: orig04.deviantart.net/c31a/f/2… (hope you don't mind!) The main thing I noticed was the hairline. Hairlines are usually more of a gradual gradient, and when they're painted too sharp they can look wig-ish. There would also be a lot less hair on her right than her left--hair is much thinner on whatever side it's parted on, even when you've got a tons of hair (this is something that only really dawned on me recently when I was brushing my hair in the mirror, so I don't even know if it's influenced my art yet!) Minor things I did were: shadow the whites of the eyes to make them more 3d, add the lower eye waterline to take it another step toward realism, and soften the lips/jawline.

But anyway, I think you did a wonderful job here. I love the brushwork and that textured brush you're using! You also did great on the overall lighting and her skin-tones. I hope this is helpful, and keep up the good work!

Thank you!

No, not at all, that was incredibly helpful, I've already done the changes. The hair part really helps me, now I see how it looked very big and wig-ish before. I really appreciate the time you took to do that, it helped immensely! Thank you so much again.
