Description A QUICK AND DIRTY little guide of some concepts to help with using references for character designing (or any designing, really!) that help with making unique designs that don't stray close to their sources of inspiration!

Theres a lot of different ways to approach designing and using references, but for beginners or people just starting out in design it can be a little nebulous on what to do or how to use source images effectively without crossing the line into copying, i hope these techniques help!

some additional thoughts:

- in regards to adopts and CS specifically, i recommend getting inspiration sources from outside of the community! it helps bring new ideas to the table rather than rehashing old ones, and you don't have to worry nearly as much about the "my adopt design is too close to this adopt design and im gonna get in trouble" aspect

-think about what you want as a designer! just like with an art style, if you get really into designing you will develop your own style in terms of your design tastes! collect anything that interests you, and build up that visual library and personal aesthetic tastes!

- like a reference? like a specific outfit? don't just copy it! it maybe way easier to just outright take an outfit from a photograph, but redesigning and figuring out what you like about it helps you develop design skills! also, if someone knows the source material you are taking, it makes your design lose a lot of uniqueness and interest, because it wasn't your idea to start ;0

-"nothing is original anyways so who cares? i should just be able to copy whatever i want"
Well, you are right that nothing is outright original, and theres no law stopping you, but people aren't gonna want to work with you, buy your art or probably even get to know you if you are taking other peoples stuff, and you are closing a lot of doors and hurting a lot of feelings, especially when you reference personal characters- people tend not to like that.
also, even if concepts have to be born from things we know, that doesn't mean people are incapable of creating unique concepts from unoriginal material!

- find resources to fit your interests! if you like fantasy clothing, get references of medieval garb, look at popular fantasy games, etc.! theres a resource for anything if you look hard enough >:3c

I thought it would be fun to share some insp boards vs final designs!! some things to note is how sometimes i don't use certain images on my boards at all- its just nice to have options!! also 2 of these are customs, so the refs are chosen by the commissioner + sometimes extras from my visual library that i think suit the idea!

 vs.          vs         vs

well hopefully that covers everything!! i hope this is helpful to someone out there! /o/

So it means it's okay to use other people artwork as a reference and I shouldn't feel bad about it?

yep!! heres a dirty little secret for you: almost any artist you admire has a collection of artists who have been big inspirations for them and have a large influence on their style!

the keyword is inspiration/reference: should you copy, trace, or heavily reference an artist/design and pass it off as your own work? absolutely not!
but is it fine to be inspired by anything, including other artists in moderate, thoughtful amounts? absolutely! /o/

WAHHH IM SO GLAD HOSHII! the really fun thing about this is that as you get better/more confident, the less you gotta use refs DFGDFG like for me nowadays i only lean on refs if i reeeaally have nothing in mind and just need something to get me started, but all of these designs + a lot more are from my imagination/ mental library (developed from my visual one)!

(exception on the last set: the shape of oil splash's top and the concept of a drippy pattern on the suit for MCR LAUGHS)

This! is excellent! I generally take inspiration from no fewer than 3-5 references or if I'm doing a study of a singular piece, I usually don't post it as it's not 100% my work.
Thank you for making this guide though, it'll make a really positive impact.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pajuxi-Adopts In reply to toripng [2019-08-01 02:54:49 +0000 UTC]

AAAA THANK YOU TORI!!! omg big same i usually run in the 5-10 references range if im using any, even if i don't use all of them its just nice to have a large pool to pull from! /o/

and I hope so!! i think its one of those things wheres its hard to figure out when you are just starting out, the line is really blurry on inspiration/copying so its just nice preventative measures

This is very helpful! And honestly really sweet to do? It can be difficult to figure out where to start with things like this, or even what kind of questions you should be asking! I've been a writer a long time, but often feel at a loss trying to design my characters to be visually interesting, so I often feel like if I want a character to be as pretty as interesting, I need to ask someone for help, or purchase a nice design.  This makes me want to take a crack at it again, myself! aaa im so glad to hear it!! Designing is definitely its own thing where its a different skillset, and its always hard to know where to get started on something new! I'm really happy this guide gave you some confidence and i wish you luck on your ventures! c:

Ah, good pointers! Especially your additional thoughts, all very valid! I think it's important to be able to look outside of what you're used to. It's such a simple thing to forget to draw inspiration and ideas from all over the place!

Pajuxi-Adopts In reply to calicobud [2019-08-01 02:45:11 +0000 UTC]

aaa im so glad you think so!! And for sure- i think its a really easy thing to forget but honestly, at least in my experience, my most interesting ideas come from random concepts not related to character design or things im just generally passionate about!!
