No it wasn't, do your research. The majority of the founding fathers were ATHEISTS.

My Christian-centric history books in the private Christian school I attended for 1-12 said that, and it has driven me up a WALL ever since I learned REAL American history.
The reason the Puritans came to the New World was to have the freedom to worship how they wanted to worship without the King dictating what they could and couldn't do. From that (and generally being told what to do by the King of England, period!), the country was founded on the principle of no government dictated religion or religious practices!
This principle meant two things:
1) You could worship whatever you wanted whenever and however you wanted, including not worshipping anything AT ALL, and
2) you couldn't have another person's religious beliefs forced upon you by the government.
Even the Founding Fathers who were Christian were passionately in agreement on that point, that religion has no place in our government's laws. All of them β Christians, Deists, and everything else β would be turning in their graves if they knew the lengths Evangelicals have gone to in order to try and FORCE the population to live their lives according to Christian standards via state and federal laws.
That principle is the reason why DOMA was overturned as unconstitutional by the SCOTUS, too: it defined marriage by religious (Christian) standards based on religious doctrine, therefore forcing the entire population to abide by Christian standards for marriage even if they weren't Christians themselves.
Christians have the distinct reputation in this country for thinking that whole portion of our founding and the Constitution doesn't apply to us... just 'cuz, basically. We are we and they are they, and we are right because we (and OUR holy book) say so.
And I say all of that as a Christian (still).

No, it wasn't. That "under god" part of the presidential pledge wasn't added untill the 50's, secondly, the USA wasn't founded under ANY religion, as the first amendment states.
So no, the USA was not built on religion, ANY religion.

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,βas it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims ],βand as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Mohammedan ] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

Sorry but this is an incorrect statement. in the constitution it states 'freedom of religion' these means people are free to choice late in it they have 'seperation of church and state' which means government can not support or make laws based on ANY religion.

But not founded it. The Founding Fathers saw the church as a threat to personal liberties. So they made sure to install laws that will prevent religion from taking over into the constitution. Which many fundamentalist in America seem to ignore a lot.

Very true.
I don't mind if I see someone praying on the side of the road for seemingly no reason. Oh well, their deal. But if they come into a government building and do it- I want to scream. Same as if they are praying at some disaster zone. If your there, if your able bodied, do something don't just sit there talking to yourself.

I don't remember all the details to well, but I do remember hearing something about the concept of two people "belonging to each other" being pre-religious, or at the very least before Christianity.

Even the religious based part I have doubts with when it comes to any intolerance. If God allows you to be born into the world as you are, then it means he loves you the way you are and he would want his other children to be just as open minded.
π: 0 β©: 1
PaleoClipperArt In reply to Gray-Rose [2011-01-14 04:04:14 +0000 UTC]
I'd like it to be that way. But sadly alot of people not only debate with themselves on who, what, and how, god acts, but they decide that their opinion of this god is is also the opinion of their god. They then decide to press that opinion on anyone who is not of their opinion.
Common issues: homosexuality, is hell fire or separation from god, did jesus have a kid, is god all loving or just and damning, there are many more of course.

Gray-Rose In reply to PaleoClipperArt [2011-01-14 04:08:23 +0000 UTC]
I think that religion is a personal thing. You should believe for yourself not others. Even if your belief is atheism. I find it sad when people force belief by putting it into the law because nothing good comes from it. If anything, it's actions like that which make religion look bad after.
π: 0 β©: 1
PaleoClipperArt In reply to Gray-Rose [2011-01-14 04:20:05 +0000 UTC]
Indeed those actions are. If people were able to keep their religious beliefs private I would be happy. But even online people put signature up "jesus is my savior!" which is pretty benign, but I've also seen "faggits are going to hell". So...yah... It would be very nice if religion were kept private. but it sadly just isn't. Which is why I publicly denounce it, and try to expose what is wrong with it.
I do have to mention one thing, have you noticed all the heated opinions on the Millions are Good stamp, yet this one has almost no discussion on it at all? I really thought this stamp would get people angry at me, not one that shows people don't need god to be good. Odd in my mind. Off topic I know, but it just came to mind.

As a Christian, I believe God tries to guide us into doing good, but it's up to the person to make the effort to do good. Also, goodness doesn't come from religion. Though religion can offer a form of guidance for morals, it's not the only thing in this world that can inspire those things. Religion does not give morals. Those are something a person attains from the influences of their own actions and those of others. With that said while keeping in mind that we live in a world where belief is very diverse, you can't say religion or lack of religion is the source of what makes a person good or bad. It's our own actions.
