Yet another edit...As of today (5/8/09) this has been updated with a proper scanned version.

EDIT
Well! I think that about does it. I am thinking this will be it for this little painting, it's probably best that I move on. I've changed the muzzle, (made it larger/adjusted perspective as best I could) re-centered the star on his forehead, added more blue to the shadows (trust me on this, they're there even though they don't show up... crappy camera
In other news, my wrist is feeling much better now, about 80%.
--------------------------------------------------------------
So this is the next in the series, a spirited little Haflinger. And that's right, it's a WIP shot (albeit a good ways into the painting) so that means I'm requesting your critique and feedback.
A few notes first: His mane is not finished, and also the star on his forehead as well as his nostrils are off center/twisted and not aligned with the perspective. These I will fix! Still trying to work out the background... clearly, it's sunny. Right?
Chestnut/palomino is much easier to paint than black. Naturally.
Let me know what else needs a'fixin'!

The movement and composition are astounding, the negative spaces you've created are beautifully embracing and flowing and the main breaks everything up with so much energy and interest. I love it! I've read about what you mentioned, that the main is unfinished and I think that's what makes it slightly unclear that the weather is "sunny", it could just be that the photograph needed sunlight ( I don't know), but I can tell you that the whites will stand out if the darks are darker, and you can make the blacks have more depth by adding color to them, for example adding red to your black will make it appear darker then regular black, adding green will make it seem a bit closer, you can also use this to warm and cool black areas. There could be an amazing play between orange and blue (overall) when this is finished if you flow a bit of blue shadows into the main to collide with orange highlights from the reddish brown body. And of course it will seem sunnier by using bright highlights in the hair, but the whitest white in the end, you will probably want on that star otherwise the hair could be become overpowering and distracting rather then complementing the overall composition. It would also be nice to see some subtle reflected light, I know the highlights are not in yet, but the shadow from the head gives some hint of where the sunlight is coming from, reflected light often makes things more real then even photographs without it do, it gives things more dimension, and can also be used to bring out the beauty of colors by complementing the main color used in the highlights.
Now I need to go and paint! This is beautiful work!

I unfortunately don't have the technical knowital with painting to give an advanced critique. However I will say that I know a few photoshop techniques that will make your pictures of your art 'op' more then they do when you just snapshot them.
If you are interested in learning how, drop me a line.

All right! Now he looks done! I really like how you did the mane in this one. Great shading, as usual :}

That should be scream haflinger... not cream. And yay for the longest run-on sentence ever... lol!

Been loving these, trying to catch up on commenting today... this is my favourite so far! I'm too late for crits as you've finished it, I will say that even though I knew straight away from the colour (and the title) that this was a depiction of a haflinger, the only part that maybe doesn't cream haflinger as much is the muzzle, being quite dainty and not too pony-ish... BUT you have finished it, and as you said you have adjusted it as much as you could, and in any case it's still a beautiful muzzle! I very much like the colours here too, if you have a haflinger, you have to have some blue sky!

Very good, the ear looks very good now. It's a little thing, but definetly the lack of the "shadow" did show and now it looks much better. Neck looks great too, I think you did a very good job at going back to this! Fabulous

I'll not echo any comments of "where's the ear?" or "the muzzle's too small!" because, well, they've already been said! I did think it was an arabian at first, but that's more my inexperience with horses than anything.
I'll just commend you on a wonderful job, especially with an injury!
When you do these portraits, are you working straight from memory or do you have some kind of reference material?

Late comment is late... I think my inbox must be eating them or something.
I use various references in addition to my memory, depending on how good the memory is, or if I trust it. But normally I work at compiling a nearly 3-D image of the thing inside my head and then just draw it.

Oh it's fine... I'm not exactly prompt replying to my own comments, so I understand.
I see! That seems like a good way to do things, I normally just wing it until I find some part I have trouble with... ><;

That looks really good. I think that you nailed the highlights on the muscles and the anatomy structure dead on. In my opion the muzzle seems a bit small, but that could be because it is black and the warmer colours are making it shrink.

Yep, the muzzle is a tad small. Nothing a little paint can't fix, though.

if your wrist was injured doing this, then i take my hat off to you ( i think that s how you say it ) .
beautiful , gorgeous , can i say more ?

Oh no, my wrist was injured due to repetitive stress. I did something to it years ago (broke my fall with it, I think) and every once in a while it gets set off and I can't use it at all. It's really frustrating, especially since I'm not entirely sure what the underlying cause is.
All that aside, thank you very much!

your very welcome , i kow how you feel , i broke my elbow falling off a horse when i was ten , and when i bend it sometimes it starts hurting like muscle spazz , but it keeps hurting for 2 or 3 days after and i can 't do anything with it . thank god im right handed , id be stuck without a right arm . and i ve just broken that arm , a horse kicked me , and i had surgery , and as a result , i have six screws and two plates of metal in there , which im sure it s going to hurt in the cold and when im much older , it s gonna suck , oh well , it happens to the best of us
