Description Yes, even more pallanophs. At least this time they are in a scene and interacting with one another!

I realize it's been a rather frightfully long time (over a year) since I'd uploaded anything regarding the Russian pallanoph type. There was a considerable amount of excitement over this variety when I uploaded the sketches here: A year later and pallanophs have shifted a bit, but hopefully you'll see the concept is more or less the same.

The Russian male (center) is in his summer coat here (most of the undercoat has been shed) and has decided it would be a lovely idea to move south into Chinese territory. Not the best decision, but prey is a little easier to come by here, and he decides it's worth it. After all... he can handle these diminutive Chinese beasts.

Well, the Chinese pair, a male and female, don't exactly see things the same way as their northern neighbor. Nuisance outsiders are not to be tolerated, no matter what their size. Especially if it is a large one that steals their kills!

Who has the upper hand? The Chinese pair are a perfect match against the lone Russian. Will brute strength and overwhelming size win they day, or will swift and agile steal the victory?

I would very much like to take this into consideration for a final painting, if I can salvage the composition. X_X But until then, more sketches!

Questions, critiques, comments, etc. are always welcome.

These pallanophs look great, but what are they? Is it fantasy set on Earth?
Anyway, it's some great art

Very beautiful, the movement and tenseness of the scene makes me want to know what happens next! The detail of the fur and paws are awesome.

Even with all that fur, the sketches are lovely and clean. The concept behind the species is really interesting, and I love, love, LOVE the design. Their bodies are so tangible, and I love the dynamicism of the jumping pose.

I've been looking at this piece some more and I have to say: in terms of composition, if you're going to make this into a finished piece, it may be better to leave out the left Chinese pallanoph completely

Just some random thoughts x'D Sorry.

Still think this one is made of total win.

Great to see the Russian breed again. I really like them, something about the size, and shape of the head. It's quite a noble profile and at the same time they look so uncompromising and tough.

I think the composition could be fixed by moving the combatants' positions a bit - when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was two or three sketches combined on a page, they feel a little crowded, and the Russian seems to be staring into the middle distance past the rightmost pallanoph's rump. I really like his pose, by the way - the way his weight is forward, unbalanced, gives the sense that he's piling off that rock just starting to charge.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Hareguizer [2010-04-22 03:33:12 +0000 UTC]

I think you've appropriately summed up all that I was going for in the Russian type! Which makes me super happy, of course.

And thanks very much for your suggestion, I think you're definitely right about that! I'll see if I can fix it when I hopefully go into making this a finished piece.

The Russian's pose was changed several times, so I'm really glad it reads well, too!

Ohh I adore this dynamism and the whole composition, however the left pallanoph seems a bit off. But that can be just me ^^'' Well, anyway, it's just so, so great. I also love how soft and clean everything is. I can totally see this in colours, heh.
Wonderful work, no matter how trite my words sounds.

pallanoph In reply to ArianSilver [2010-04-21 17:24:35 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, your words don't sound trite at all. I did run out of room in my sketchbook for the pallanoph in that upper left corner, so he was shrunk down, hehe.

I'd love for this particular sketch to become a painting, but we'll see if my lack of motivation, etc. allow for it!

And thank you!

How very kind of you! I've been obsessing over them lately, it's almost a bit ridiculous, hehe... I keep failing to write down some information on them, but this is probably because there are so many variations I get a bit dizzy. There will be a book on them at some point in time!!!

Here I was just using a 0.5 mechanical pencil (F lead), as well as a B 2.0 mm lead, in a sketchbook (Aquabee). Nothing too fancy!
