Description Yes, even more pallanophs. At least this time they are in a scene and interacting with one another!

I realize it's been a rather frightfully long time (over a year) since I'd uploaded anything regarding the Russian pallanoph type. There was a considerable amount of excitement over this variety when I uploaded the sketches here: A year later and pallanophs have shifted a bit, but hopefully you'll see the concept is more or less the same.

The Russian male (center) is in his summer coat here (most of the undercoat has been shed) and has decided it would be a lovely idea to move south into Chinese territory. Not the best decision, but prey is a little easier to come by here, and he decides it's worth it. After all... he can handle these diminutive Chinese beasts.

Well, the Chinese pair, a male and female, don't exactly see things the same way as their northern neighbor. Nuisance outsiders are not to be tolerated, no matter what their size. Especially if it is a large one that steals their kills!

Who has the upper hand? The Chinese pair are a perfect match against the lone Russian. Will brute strength and overwhelming size win they day, or will swift and agile steal the victory?

I would very much like to take this into consideration for a final painting, if I can salvage the composition. X_X But until then, more sketches!

Questions, critiques, comments, etc. are always welcome.

LoveLoveLove your art! Might I ask, what do you use for anatomical and realism references?

... guess that's all I've got to say ... I'm gonna go check out your site again now ...

Thanks very much! I've been studying all sorts of anatomy since I was quite young: started with using reference photos, more recently looking at anatomical drawings of various species to get a look at how they work. Basically, if it's on the subject of anatomy, I take a look at it.

Anatomy is awesome!

What do you do for the fur? How do you know when to stop drawing it or if it's shaded enough or if there is enough of a wave in it?

I've been itching to do slightly more fleshed out action scenes... I have sketchbooks full of loose drawings of these just rampaging about, but never finish any of them.

I definitely hope to! *puts it on the to-do list*

Wow, I love all the action shown here! It's hard to tell exactly how much bigger the Russian pallanoph is because of the angles, but it's still really awesome! Not sure who would win in a fight like this o.o It really could go either way. Great drawing all around :}

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2010-04-21 16:44:50 +0000 UTC]

It is rather impossible to tell, isn't it? The Russian is supposed to be nearly twice the size of the Chinese. The female in the foreground is standing quite close to us on a bit of a hill, though I didn't give a good enough indication of space to show just how far away the Russian is, as well as the male Chinese behind him. Augh space you defy me!

They are perfectly matched! It's all on timing.

Thanks, dear!

Narkya In reply to ??? [2010-04-19 19:57:31 +0000 UTC]

I'm not exactly sure why, but the upper left pallanoph looks out of place, almost as if it wasn't supposed to be in the same sketch. Maybe it's because there is no background connecting it to the happenings at the bottom. Maybe it's because it is too small, too far away to fit. Maybe it's because the rock the Russian is standing on looks as if it continues higher up. Or maybe it's because the Russian totally ignores that Chinese and only goes after the one nearby.
In any way, it looks as if the jumping upper left Chinese would miss his target by jumping short.

On the other hand, that Chinese pallanoph on the right has the look of my cat when something frightened her. That look when their hair stands up into the air and they sound like a swan protecting his nest. I like it! It gives their other personality traits away, those that they have that aren't "looking noble and cuddly".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Narkya [2010-04-21 16:41:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh, don't worry, you're quite right about that, and I can see what you mean. It's further misleading because the angle makes it impossible for us to tell how the two types compare in size, the Russian being nearly twice the size of the Chinese. So it's really tricky, and then of course I ran out of room in that corner.

I love drawing their "surprised snarl" faces, eeeheee! I've been wanting to draw some "expression sheets" for these guys, just so others can get a taste of all the faces they can make.

Place restrictions... they can come in handy and they can destroy everything. But I'm sure you'll figure this one out soon!

Oh yeah, expressino sheets sound brilliant! It would be such a nice different take on that "meme"...
