A re-sketching of this character: fav.me/d4c1r37 Subtle redesigning in progress, but his overall look seems to be remaining the same. (Large facial crest, six eyes, too many tusks, ridiculous antlers, ya know.) His name is Jin, and he is a kirin/qilin/kylin, whatever you'd like to call them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin
I don't know how anyone draws complex creature designs more than once. I don't find it satisfying, but I am a simple person and I prefer simple designs.
Digitally colored pencil sketch, Photoshop (PHOTOCHOP!) CS3. (I find I can't upgrade to CS6 at a reasonable price, so piss on you and your fanciness, I'm poor.) You can critique if you'd like, but I'd prefer if suggestions be specific regarding digital techniques. I am a hack and don't regularly handle digital media.

This is such a marvelous creature design...Β And you're right.Β It's an absolute pain in the butt to use a super-duper detailed critter for more than a single drawing.Β "I've gone through the trouble to design it, SO THERE!"Β Still.Β Wicked cool and full of glowing bits; ain't Photochopping fun?!

ANYTHING with scales, decorative feathers, and more than four limbs/impossible antlers, and I slam the book shut and say "NOPE." (Jin is the only exception to my rule thus far, and he's rarely drawn!) Too many colors gets me, too. Jin here is mostly brassy/bronze/coppery with raven black mane and those glowy bits you see here. So he's at least simple color-wise!
I imagine photochopping would be even more fun if I could get my hands on the newest features/splurged on tutorial vids to get me to learn more. But the glowing junk is definitely fun!

Thanks! I find I'm on a bit of a blue and orange kick at the moment. If I feel brave, maybe I'll use other complimentary palettes.
