Description
Behold! The first bird painting to be submitted since last October. This is actually a metaphorical/symbolic self portrait, to be honest, and I choose the mockingbird to represent myself for a number of reasons. Not the least of these is my ability to "mimic" through observation of my influences and adding bits to my own "style", and reflecting the world as I myself see it, all the while making a fair amount of noise, ha.
The bird holds a heavy silver key, spotted with rust from misuse, a weight that drags the bird down with it, though the bird refuses to let go. It could use this key, this ability, if it knew where to find the proper door. But where to begin looking?
Just my feelings on what I'm doing lately making their way into my work. Perhaps the sentiment may change someday when I can properly apply myself. >.< You'll find a similarly themed painting here:
This painting also sort of pays homage to some of my earlier artistic influences (from when I was a young child, honestly): John James Audubon, for one, and I've had a strong admiration of Asian art for a very long time. To be truthful, I'd never acknowledged it had slipped into my work until told by others more recently. Strange how these things work!
I'll willingly accept any critique you can give, but if you've just got comments/questions, that's fine, too.
14 ¼" x 7" (36 x 17 ¾ cm, roughly). Mixed media on fiberboard: acrylic, watercolor, gouache, acrylic sepia ink.
Art and concept © April Schumacher.

Yes yes! It's been quite rainy as of late here, and I got caught out in a light rain on my way home today. Oh well... Looks like it'll be raining/storming off and on until Thursday? But of course, it's the weather, so who knows!

Gee, I hope you didn't have any drawings with you! 0_0
Yeah, the weather in MN is particularly hard to gauge.

Nope, no drawings aside from those in that infamous Moleskine sketchbook. It wasn't raining hard enough to get inside my bag, so all arrived just fine.
Especially in the summer, it would seem...

That's good! Yeah, this rain is crazy. I just came to MCAD and it's sure coming down! My shoes - my good, thick shoes - are wet enough that my socks and toes are feeling damp. Ugh…

Since I didn't see in the description, would you care to elaborate on what kind of bird/s influence you to paint? It's very mockingbird-esque but I don't want to say that's excactly what it is because it's something that holds a personal value to you. So it could be anything! It's just so detailed and even has that emtional and personal attachment that seems to give the overall work a shine. I hope to see more like that!

Absolutely breathtaking piece as usual April - I love the background thoughts behind this, and that colour palette works wonders!
Besides, I'm really happy to see this little Mockingbird again!

Why thank you! It's been almost a year since this bird made an appearance.
Perhaps... I should do a series?

Very beautiful! And I love your explanation of the symbolism. In a way, it's a moment in life that we can all relate to at some time or another. Identity, transition, weight. It's something that I know I'm experiencing currently and it makes your wonderful image speak to me as I'm sure it does to many. Your ability to communicate with your art is very inspiring and I am constantly reminded of how much your work moves me

Thank you very kindly!
I know I often remind myself that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Sometimes people hide their feelings better, but none should forget that there will be times when we wonder what on earth we are doing... or should be doing. I'm glad that this speaks to you, and hopefully to many others!

Very beautiful!
May be you have put it in your comment (it difficult to me to find something like that in translate @_@), but when I has seen this picture I have thought that this bird has a key which can open any cage. And this bird will be free forever. ^^'
PS: and eyes is something incredible... *-*

Thank you! Actually, what you've written here is another thought I had while painting this. Also, a very positive way to look at it.
(My writing is probably nearly impossible to translate, hehe...
)
Glad you like the eyes!

Yeah, I can definately see the asian influences. That's actually what I thought I was clicking on!
I love the colors you chose for the background and the sort of dingy feel to it. It really makes it feel realistic.
I like your self-imagery you used the mockingbird for, too! It reminds me of a poem thing I did a few years ago using a lynx/bobcat. Very self reflecting, especially when you add so much detail to the description!

Ahaha! Amazing what the subconscious will do... in my case, make my works resemble Asian paintings, lol.
Thanks very much!
