Description Behold! The first bird painting to be submitted since last October. It's been far too long. This was finished between other scheming and just had to come out. It was a less than perfect excuse to get some painting done, but there it is all the same.

This is actually a metaphorical/symbolic self portrait, to be honest, and I choose the mockingbird to represent myself for a number of reasons. Not the least of these is my ability to "mimic" through observation of my influences and adding bits to my own "style", and reflecting the world as I myself see it, all the while making a fair amount of noise, ha. I take this thought on mimicry a step further and wonder if the mockingbird has its own inner identity. Who is the mockingbird, really, under its varied and conflicting songs? I often ask this question of myself! In this painting, the mockingbird's eyes seem to be cloudy blue instead of bright gold; and its wings and tail are insubstantial, two dimensional. The bird also seems to be falling more than flying, and one wonders if it may correct its path at some point on the way down!

The bird holds a heavy silver key, spotted with rust from misuse, a weight that drags the bird down with it, though the bird refuses to let go. It could use this key, this ability, if it knew where to find the proper door. But where to begin looking?

Just my feelings on what I'm doing lately making their way into my work. Perhaps the sentiment may change someday when I can properly apply myself. >.< You'll find a similarly themed painting here:

This painting also sort of pays homage to some of my earlier artistic influences (from when I was a young child, honestly): John James Audubon, for one, and I've had a strong admiration of Asian art for a very long time. To be truthful, I'd never acknowledged it had slipped into my work until told by others more recently. Strange how these things work!

I'll willingly accept any critique you can give, but if you've just got comments/questions, that's fine, too.

14 ¼" x 7" (36 x 17 ¾ cm, roughly). Mixed media on fiberboard: acrylic, watercolor, gouache, acrylic sepia ink.

A lovely painting :} I really like the dark and faded colors you used in conveying the emotion. It looks like that key's about to slip o.O It might be a bit rusty, but cling to it!

Thank you! I love those sorts of colors, there's a sort of harmony that comes naturally to them.

Ahhh! *clings to key*

Hahah! ^_^

Will you be submitting anything to the Splice contest? I decided to go ahead and submit Nokomis to it. I doubt I'll win anything, but I figured I'd play too.

Eh... I've never really been a big fan of contests, I must confess. This is probably due to having an itty bitty ego and poor time management. I dunno. I feel incredibly pressured to create something even remotely interesting or unique with these sorts of things. That's why I tend to work better on my own whims, but we'll see if I can think of something in the meantime.

Kudos to you!

I haven't really participated in them either. The only other time I'd thought about it was for a tee shirt design, using my water phoenix. Well, I got about 1/4 of the way done before it dawned on me that I'd probably never finish it. And it's still sitting unfinished on my external.

And thank you :}

Interesting self portrait. Do you feel like it's a self portrait based off of where you are in life at this moment or just yourself in general?

I ask because the colors are very subdued and pale, which is an interesting choice for a self portrait.

pallanoph In reply to whisperinghearts [2010-05-08 20:29:52 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, now that is a good question. It a bit of me in general, and me now.

Since I no longer have the structured life I had when there was school, multiple jobs, and several friends, I feel much less secure and sure of myself and where I'm going. There no longer seems to be anything that can stand beside me and guide me. Sounds silly, but that is probably one of the roots of the problem as it stands now.

I think subdued colors suit my inner self quite well. I'm normally pretty pacifist, reflective, shy, and a bit of a hermit. Along with a lot of timidness! Besides, bright colors might give one the feeling that I'm decisive and confident, which I am not! I have no idea if my reasoning makes sense anymore...

whisperinghearts In reply to pallanoph [2010-05-12 16:28:27 +0000 UTC]

Hm, really? Very interesting. I guess, it sounds like there's a little more color in you. But there again I've never met you in real life, and internet friendships/aquaintences/etc. are not generally the most accurate ways of telling what the other person is like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to whisperinghearts [2010-05-13 04:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, perhaps there is more "color" to my personality, depending on how one looks at me. But this is kind of how I see myself, with my own eyes. Perhaps if someone else did a portrait of me, it might be more colorful?

Basically, I wouldn't say I'm terribly exciting in the "let's go on a grand adventure!" sense, but then again, I don't think many are. My conversation is spontaneous, at the very least.

I'd like to think I put myself in type pretty honestly, I don't try to hide who I am... but again, you can't see or hear me! (Mercifully so! )

whisperinghearts In reply to pallanoph [2010-05-20 17:25:01 +0000 UTC]

This is true. Our perspctive on ourselves can definitely be biased - if it isn't always a little biased in one form or another.

"Grand adventure" people don't necessarily have more "color" to their personalities, though. Or I'd argue for that, anyways. Depends on how you measure it.

True enough. We should meet up one of these days, though. New freshmen illustrator meets wise graduated illustrator… It could be like "The Karate Kid" gone artist!

Haha! Messes can be FUN! I think you've probably experienced that at MCAD… both the joys and the terrors.

Er… experienced then? You could settle for that, I should think. I actually live just a few blocks from MCAD, so one day you're around the campus I could meander over?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to whisperinghearts [2010-06-12 03:06:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I do remember. It seems much more amusing when I look back on it than it did as it was all happening. Perhaps I've forgotten how many times I forgot to eat and fell asleep on my desk...

"Survivor" might be the best word choice. But "experienced" makes me feel more accomplished.

That would be awesome! I should make a point to wander by on Fridays/Saturdays. I used to be on campus a lot more frequently in past years, seeming as I lived so much closer, hehe.

whisperinghearts In reply to pallanoph [2010-06-16 19:33:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's not so amusing while it's happening - or while your'e watching your friend do those kinds of things (I have a friend that does those all-nighter things too many days in a row, while she really should sleep…). Haha! Do you get a t-shirt from that?? "I survived MCAD and all I got was this stupid t-shirt and a $100, 000 loan to pay off"

I'm at MCAD on and off, cuz my apartment has no internet… and my adobe stuff only works while connected to the internet. But yeah, let me know when you plan to be at MCAD sometime and I'll make a point to stop by and finally meet you. ^__^

Ha! I wish I'd gotten a t-shirt, one less thing I'd have to buy!

Funny thing, there's a chance I might stop by this Thursday or even Friday. Or Saturday. I'm the sort to station a workspace in the student center, ha... No one suspects I'm an alumni from two years ago!

whisperinghearts In reply to pallanoph [2010-06-22 22:14:21 +0000 UTC]

Heehee, maybe I'll have to do a project in a class that requires making a shirt, in which case that's what it'll have on it.

Gah, I was with out-of-state MCAD friends visiting me and my roomates.

I'll be at MCAD tomorrow, that's for sure. Gotta get my financial aid in order so I can come here in the fall. Sometime… let's see… after 1:00pm… Probably will be there for at least an hour and a half, maybe more. I'm always either in the college center, library or outside on a table, depending on the weather and if the library is open.

You need to draw a sneaky pallanoph sneaking cookies from a cookie jar!!… Hell, I think I'll make some fan art of that for you!

Delightful! This weekend I shall be venturing to South Dakota for a family renunion (the first I've ever been to), but I'd be pleased to visit with you again at the next available time! I was hoping you might be free today honestly, I really want to walk to the library on Nicolet, but it's a long walk and I prefer to walk in pairs or groups, simply cuz it's safer and it's more fun! Alas alas.

And darn! I had work until 7:00 this evening, otherwise I totally would have gone with you! Funny thing about going out in groups, as I dropped by Rainbow after work to get cheaper groceries (lol!) and was of course, alone, when I was hit on from a distance by two guys driving out of the lot. I just gave them my face. And then they were gone. Ewww....

I shall, or at least, I hope I shall! It's traveling at least, and that's better than being cooped up in my apartment at the moment.

Dang. *sad face* I never got to go anyways, unfortunately. The fellow I was hoping would be available to go with didn't contact me back, so I didn't get to the library. I still need to go… want to go? Want and need are about the same thing at the moment.

Dude, rainbow and cub are the way to go! Better than walmart, too. The Wedge is expensive, so I get your reasoning completely! I'm tired of creepy men, they're annoying. And two days ago I had my first encounter with a highly drunk/high/mentally unstable fellow and I was unfortunate enough to have my back against a wall, sitting in a chair. Luckily I was with people who were able to handle it well, and he was too preoccupied with the dog. It was scary for me, though. But now I know what it's like.

Travel is a pretty good thing. I'm a complete dork, though, so if I'm headed somewhere unfamiliar I get huge bouts of anxiety. Ugh!

Oh noes! And I had work today until 7, too... I have to work this Thursday at 2:30, as well... unless earlier is a possibility!

Creepy men and other creepers are one of the main reasons I hate the buses so much. In a bus, you can't really get away from them. They're there, and either you get off, or they do.

I should take you traveling in the cities with me, then! You can come with my small circle of friends. We all make it fun! Provided, of coarse, we are sure to stay in the safe parts of town…

Do you like walking at all? I love taking walks during the day, so if you enjoy that at all perhaps you'd like to join me some Friday or Saturday?

Um, yeeeeah. I like the bus, but I don't fancy riding certain ones. What of the Lightrail? What is your opinion/experience on that?

pallanoph In reply to whisperinghearts [2010-07-03 03:55:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, I do love walking... haven't done much of that since winter, and it's less fun then. Going on a walk sometime does sound lovely!

I've only ridden the Lightrail a few times... Seemed pretty tame overall, I think.

If I had a bike I'd say let's go biking, but as of now I don't have one. Working on it, though. Would you be interested in a walk sometime, or not really your thing?

I would agree. Granted, I never went on the lightrail without my tall, dark-skinned friend, simply cuz I had no reason without him cuz we went to the MOA and such. That probably helped too.

Let's do that sometime soon, then! I have no idea what the weather in MN is like at the moment. I'm in South Dakota, and here it down-poured, and then the rain all moved Eastward into MN and WI, apparently.

Agreed! It's by far a safer thing to do at particular times, if not just in general.
