Description The second 'part' to a set of paintings I was inspired to create based on a quote -

"Goshawks are water. Falcons are air and hot stone. Goshawks are water and wood." -- Helen Macdonald

This is the goshawk, water and wood. Northern Goshawks are rather intense creatures, and yes, the eyes of the adults really are deep red.

Watercolor on cold-press Arches paper, about 9X12 inches

It's a Goshawk! Excellent job! These birds are beautiful anyway, but I like the color scheme.

Beautiful hawk and beautiful art!
The atmosphere fits really well with the accipiter, the intense gaze waiting for the next unfortunate creature to come into range. I love it!

This is just as stunning, perhaps even more so, than I expected! My favourite thing is the pose of the wonderful goshawk and how the blue background fades into yellow

Thank you I struggled to get the scanned blues right (I think every scanner in the world loves to push every shade of blue to the most extreme of cyan), but I got it pretty close.

I've always wondered, is it pronounced goss-hawk or gosh-hawk?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to Hira--Akami [2010-01-23 04:59:36 +0000 UTC]

It's pronounced "goss-hawk," with 'gos' meaning 'goose.' The name means, essentially, 'goose hawk'.

Intense isn't quite the word. Psychopathic, is what falconers and rehabilitation volunteers describe them as. The stories they told about Goshawks...

But my, what magnificent birds when you spot one in a bare tree in the cold of winter.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to ArchTeryx [2010-01-23 05:00:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I've read some impressive stories about them attacking hikers who venture too close to their nests. Makes me love them that much more. <3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArchTeryx In reply to windfalcon [2010-01-24 04:24:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes. The impressive thing is that they team-attack. One notable story involved a bander that was trying to band Goshawk nestlings. The female swooped and screamed and dove, the usual. His attention, of course, was drawn to her, and only luck and extreme reflexes saved him from the sneak attack by the MALE. Who was going straight for his eyes.

windfalcon In reply to ArchTeryx [2010-01-24 05:24:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah! Oh those vicious accipiters <3 Speed, strength, beauty AND brains. I remember hearing about a sharp-shin in the museum I volunteered in going for the curator's eyes when she opened the enclosure. She had a puncture right beneath her eye from that vicious little foot. I guess she opened the door, and out flies the hawk talons first.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArchTeryx In reply to windfalcon [2010-01-24 15:14:45 +0000 UTC]

I dunno if I'd call it 'brains'. They just are as aggressive as they come when it comes to attacking things that make them mad (which is pretty much everything during breeding season).

They don't do ANYTHING in half measures. The animal that holds the world record for the most recorded copulations per brood/litter is the Northern Goshawk.
