- You can't change the specie.
- You can, however, change slightly the markings. Just don't make your dragon completely different.
- You can add accessories and such.

do they need any special name or can you call them anything?

I believe I wrote that in their journal specie reference. However, their name is usually related to electronics, chemistry, physics or dead languages, like Virus, Gravity, Beta and similar.
Also, they have a barcode marking somewhere on their body. My tamakii has it on his left cheek. And under the barcode, instead of numbers, there's a sequence of three number/letters of your choice C:
