Description Shouldn’t have reminded him about that. Stupid beaver.

But seriously, don’t you find it strange that the mighty Cthulhu, this supposedly powerful, mind-bending, enormous tentacled monstrosity from space, was defeated so easily? Being ran over by a boat just doesn’t seem epic enough! Where were all the ‘splosions? Don’t things need ‘splosions to be worthwhile these days? In Call of Cthulhu Lovecraft writes about him as if he woke up grumpy from a nap.

Sure, people died. But read the lore! Cthulhu is supposed to be the HIGH PRIEST of the GREAT OLD ONES! That sounds pretty ship bow invulnerable to me! I mean, you don’t fly here billions of years ago across hundreds of thousands of light years just to tell a few Southerners to chant nonsense like ‘Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn’ and get your head cracked open on a yacht. Yeah you heard it. Fhtagn.

Ha, I always thought that was funny. The very pinnacle of madness destroyed...by a boat. Lovecraft is often anti-climactic. He builds you up, then lets you down with a thud! Love him anyway, that's just one of his unique, er...charms!

Apparently one reason for his abrupt endings, was that he wrote about his dreams. He deprived himself of sleep and food for days, then when he finally went to bed he had crazy dreams. Then, in the middle of his crazy dreams BANG he wakes up. Hmm, but how did it end? I know - a BOAT HITS HIM!!! lol

Hahaha, yeah! I had no idea about the fasting and dreaming thing. No wonder they have such an odd, surreal quality. His stories are awesome. I still need to finish At The Mountains of Madness.

Yeah "At the Mountains of Madness" is a bit "Jules Verne" in places. Some of Lovecraft's descriptions on the local geology and the deep old ones, well they're very, very, very detailed! But on the plus side, there's no rascism! Which is rare indeed for him, sadly.

Oh. I think I'm a little late, but I cannot pass this opportunity.
It seems you haven't read the Necronomicon. It's a good book. If you like Lovecraft you'll like this book.
It's stated in the Necronomicon that Cthulhu, the squidlike abomination that lies in Earth, is just a fragment, like a finger, poking through a hole in reality to our universe. It's just a mere avatar, constructed by the useless matter Cthulhu hoarded from Earth, before the stars went wrong.
The deep one that rests in R'Lyeh is only a minimal part of the real horror that Cthulhu is. Just a tiny piece of horror. As such, it can be defeated relatively easily.
But when the stars are right and the old one rises, not even the sun could stop him. Pure corruption bleeding throug every pore in the continuum. You would do right to have yourself eaten by the avatar of Cthulhu before that time comes. You have been warned.

I'll certainly take that warning to heart. I know my beaver friend didn't.

i thought he got hit by the boat and that wedged him or helped move him under ryleh so that when it sank he was stuck under it.

truewill [2011-06-16 01:46:58 +0000 UTC]

I always took it as the boat did nothing (he just reformed) but the Stars Changed or the earth shifted or something and he went back to sleep. In any case, THIS IS AN AWESOME COMIC!!!!

Pandazoic In reply to truewill [2011-06-16 02:14:16 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, that would actually make more sense, except for it being a huge coincidence - or good timing according to plot at least, haha. And thank you!

Or maybe he woke up, thought it was a weekday, realized it was Saturday, and went back to sleep.

Really funny!!! About your comment, I mean you really think some guy with a ship could beat Cthulhu? Lovecraft in all his stories always left things to the imagination of the reader or big holes trying to remain in mystery. That was was just the beginning of something worse?? or it was something that could happen just in the mind of a mad sailman???...

Pandazoic In reply to BarvckStudios [2011-06-15 22:06:49 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, so true. But he was technically defeated in that match by a yacht. I love cosmic horror

Then our problem is on translation, you see, my birth language is spanish so i read that story in spanish, comrade. However, in sure you say that for something.
Its great the cosmic horror but are just a few writers who write it well.

I always thought it was because it wasn't yet time because the stars were wrong or something.

So he was a bit groggy.

The stars weren't right, you know. And he had this rough night before, drinking with his minions till they all were dead and dreaming. Nice work!
