Description
The idea here was to take an existing drawing and analyse to what degree the image could be reproduced using 3d.In our case we chose the following comic book cover by Enki Bilal:
(Please note that this is not the exact image we reproduced, the original we used can be found in Enki Bilal's cover book L'Etat des Stocks 1999 on page 51)
The process started with an exact reproduction of the original image, which you can view here:
[Link]
(Everything in this image except the smoke is made in 3ds max 7)
The next step was to expand on both the concept and scenery of the original image. That result is the image you see above. Me and my friends goal was to create new objects which seamlessly fit into the whole world Bilal created in the original image, while using 3d-elements like specular highlights to make the image more interesting visually. Hopefully a casual observer viewing both the Bilal original and our recreation of it won't realise it has been made by separate artists.

No you are wrong. He used a digital program for 3D sculpturing.

Wow.. this is visually stunning! Awesome work. It looks like you achieved your goal.
The only criticism i have.. is the people waiting. The don't seem to fit the style of the rest of the picture.
But, damn good work nonetheless.

Listen, this, as everyone before stated is a pheominal achievmentthat you have here. Bt I want to nitpick if that's ok. I feel that the texture of the clothes could have been better. With so much time spent on everything else in the near perfect rendering, I felt that something like the bowler hat the man is wearing, shouldn't reflect light as if it were made of plastic. There are so many great simulated textures throught this piece, why not carry it through to the few pieces of clothing hat you have.

Thank you everyone! I'm very glad you all like it so much! Gonna try to answer some questions later, but right now I'll just say that the picture is rendered with 3Dsmax7 standard renderer, no toon-shader or toon-renderer or plugin. Most of the "toony" feel was painted in the textures, and the lighting also contributes alot to the final pictures unique feeling.

very intersting submission. the background you have done with 3d too right? not so easy to get a hand-drawn look into 3d images. good job on this one.

This is just awesome. I'd love to see it animated, it would look far better than Immortel - Ad Vitam, Bilal's own 3d movie.
