Description
I had a minor graphic design job I had to get done, and I couldn't figure out where to go with it so I ended up procrastinating and doing absolutely nothing the whole day
Late in the evening I got a bit sick of it and decided on a new rule I'm going to try: If I'm making no progress on a task for 2 hours or more - do something else artistic to "rev up the engine". I'm not sure if I've made any faster progress on my graphic design job, but at least now I got something done! Also I'm not now trapped in a spiral of feeling awful for having wasted an entire day. I have got some time to think about the graphic design task now, so now I know where to begin at least!
Anyways, here's Peccavi's ref sheet! I really like his colour palette - he looks so dark and scruffy
This is how we meet Peccavi in the series, but as Serena said - he wasn't always like this. He used to look really healthy and peppy not long ago - His fur was brighter and his mane looked smoother, he didn't have as many scars - sometimes he would get a pine marten or an otter to tie his fringe back with a piece of straw (like jute), to get the mane out of his eyes. He also used to be more empathetic and careful when out on a mission, but lately he's become more reckless and more of a loner.
He became like this after his mate, Lacuna, disappeared, and the circumstances around her search. He lost faith in a lot of the "higher ups" and especially the military and it's guards and scouts, but he stays loyal to the king. Peccavi became Royal Claw to the king only a few years prior to Lacuna's disappearance, after proving himself able and trustworthy on the battlefield. The Royal Claw takes orders directly from the king - this includes delivering messages, collecting debts and other tasks - but he is mostly known for going on special missions to kill notorious outlaws - some call The Royal Claw a glorified executioner.
Peccavi is not the largest of lions, but is incredibly strong and has been a soldier his entire life. He knows his way around Nivaeica and has become known for being able to take down foes much larger than himself, often quietly and respectfully. Lately though he's become more reckless and brutal in his missions, and has lost some support as a result.
I could write more, but that's a brief overview!
It'll be a while still in the comic, until we get to know him better, but he'll be very important later on.
Also: No april fools joke here, just a good old ref sheet. Phew

I'm glad you mentioned that he's not considered a big lion, because my impression of Peccavi is: "Giant!" - and I was relieved that he seemed to have such good manners, even if he'd done something a little rash recently. Maybe because I've only seen him (so far!) across from Nitora, who I'm sure isn't the largest of lions either. Lovely detail about otters and/or pine martins having the "fingers" to not only tie knots but do hair - I'd love to see that! I hope we'll get a flashback shot of younger, happier Peccavi with his mane all styled.
Hope your other design job went better once you stepped back from it for a while. Good tactic!

Yeah, I can see how it would appear like that in the comic! Peccavi is pretty much 50% mane He's not small, just not as big as one might expect from his reputation. He's just normal-size! But very skilled, with a good balance of swiftness and strength.
There are so many details I want to show from this world! Hair-styling could be one of them It'd probably only be reserved for nobles and maybe soldiers. I imagine it'd be an advantage if the lions with big manes could get the hair out of the way...
